Official Events​

  • The 50th Anniversary Official Ceremony ​
    • Date: 10:30, February 16, 2021​
    • Place: Auditorium (E-15)​
    • Livestreaming on KAIST YouTube channel
    • The official ceremony will reflect the legacy of KAIST’s first 50 years and reaffirm its commitment and dedication to serving the world for the next 100 years. A robot barista will welcome guests to the pre-reception. An AI-powered piano will give congratulatory performance and TLM (Talk-Like-Mike) will regenerate the voice of the Dr. Frederick Terman, who played a crucial role in KAIST being founded. Wearable robot that helped for handicapped users overcome their challenges will also be featured at the ceremony. Promising young researchers will share their dreams for advancements in science and technology over the next 100 years.​
  • KAIST Summit: The Role and Responsibilities of Universities in a Global Crisis​
    • Date: 10:00~12:00, February 3, 2021​
    • Place: Chung Keun-Mo Conference Hall at the Academic Cultural Complex (E-9)​
    • Global leaders in higher education and the private and public sectors will explore the new roles and responsibilities of universities in the post-COVID era. The summit will also reflect the transformations brought about in science, culture, and education to help make a grand reset of all the concerned sectors and redefine the new values that science and technology should follow in this new era.​
      Four speakers including KAIST President Sung-Chul Shin and MIT President Rafael Leif will be the panelists.​

      In celebration of the 50th anniversary, KAIST is now preparing itself for the next 50 years by redefining its mission. This international symposium will support the redefining of KAIST’s future role and responsibility in the global community.

    • Session 1: The Future Role of Universities in Society in the Next 50 Years
      In this session, we will hear from global leaders in higher education about the role of universities in the next 50 years. The foresight and vision shared in the session will serve as a guide for designing KAIST’s role for the future.

      Through partnerships with 294 institutions and universities from 65 countries, KAIST educates future leaders, performs innovative research, and serves the needs of society by contributing to the wellbeing of the global community. This session will support such development by listening to leaders from the global community. We will hear from ambassadors to the Republic of Korea about the expected roles of KAIST in the future and various opportunities for collaboration.

Academic Events​

  • Global Lecture Series Distinguished thought-leaders, scientists, and entrepreneurs will inspire the KAIST community through sharing their insights and experiences and help them navigate toward their future endeavors.   • GO KAIST : Global Opinion on Semi-Centennial of KAIST KAIST Vision 2031 pivots to focus on creating global value. To help better realize this vision, KAIST invited 37 esteemed scholars to assess where we stand and where our future potential lies ahead. The panel will evaluate all research and departments activities. The white paper on the assessment will be released in February 2021.​ The assessment criteria for the department will be:​

  • Students Conference: Pioneers 2071: Questioning the Next 50 Years​ Date: Feb 3 - 7, 2021​ Place: TBA​ This is an idea challenge type conference for global students. Participants solve some of the future global issues they expect to experience in the next 50 years in every sector. Students will present their creative solutions through modeling and simulations. ​

  • The Global University Administrators Forum​ Date: April 2021​ Place: TBA​ University administrators will examine ways to enhance administrative competitiveness. The forum will discuss ways to propel administrative innovation and organizational changes, seeking to increase the value of staff members’ working scope and their professionalism.​
  • Science Prodigy Education Forum​ Date: 14:30~17:30 November 16, 2020​ Place: Zoom Webinar​ Korea Science Academy, a KAIST affiliate, will host a forum to discuss ways to foster young science talents in more creative ways. The forum will examine the best pedagogical methodologies for teaching mathematics and sciences, especially in the emerging online educational environment.

Publication​

  • KAIST History of 50 Years The book chronicles how KAIST overcame the odds to emerge as a global leading university from its foundation in five stages. The book will also tell of some of the past innovation initiatives, alumni stories, donations to KAIST that shook the donation culture of Korea, and research highlights. ​

    E-book

  • Dream for Another 50 Years: We Cannot Change Without a Dream​ KAIST surveyed its community members and the general public on what KAIST and the world will look like 50 years in the future. The survey also asked what types of talents will be necessary for the future world. The survey results will be published next February as a book predicting the future society and KAIST.​
  • Academic Papers​ Researchers at KAIST plan to analyze KAIST’s successful innovations in education and research as a successful engineering educational model. The research articles describe how KAIST has responded to national challenges through the advancement of science and technology, and fostered the top scientists and engineers required for the nation’s rapid industrialization and economic growth. ​

Fundraising Campaign​

  • Fundraising Campaign for the 50th Anniversary Memorial Building The ground will be broken in 2022 for the 50th Anniversary Memorial Building after raising approximately 50 billion KRW through 2021. The five-story building will be the latest addition to the KAIST campus. To highlight the campus history, the new building will connect the N5 (Basic Experiment & Research) and N2 (Administration Branch) buildings, the first buildings on the main Daejeon campus after it moved from Seoul in 1987. The Memorial Building will connect the two buildings in the shape of a C and represent KAIST’s C3 core value of Challenge, Creativity, and Caring.​

  • Open KAIST Date: October 2021​ Place: KAIST campus​ KAIST reaches out to the community by opening its labs and campus to students and general public. Open KAIST provides a wide array of science and cultural programs and hands-on experiences on KAIST research through educational programs with the public. ​
