Position Announcement
(HEAD, DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING)

Applications are invited for the position of Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). KAIST was established by the government of Republic of Korea in 1971 as the first government-funded institution dedicated to higher education and research in engineering and science. KAIST has built a strong national and international reputation over the last 40 years, based on the quality of its faculty, students and programs. Today it consistently ranks #1 in many significant national rankings of engineering schools in Korea and it also ranks #21 in the 2009 London Times ranking of the world’s top 100 technology universities.

The Department of Electrical Engineering is the largest department in the institution with three divisions: Communications and Computing Division, Circuits and Systems Division, and Convergence Device and System Division. The department has 89 tenured or tenure-track faculty and more than 1,300 students (roughly 450 undergraduate students and 850 graduate students). B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered and all courses are taught in English. The department’s annual research budget for 2009 was 52 million USD. More information is available at http://www.ee.kaist.ac.kr/.

The position calls for an innovative leader, with a strategic vision specifically toward 2025 for guiding the future growth of the Department, who can communicate this vision to a constituency that includes academia, government, industry and alumni. Candidates should possess proven leadership and administrative skills, and an established reputation as a scholar consistent with an appointment to the rank of professor of electrical engineering or a related field with tenure. They should be committed to fostering current and future multi-disciplinary research and education initiatives as well as to strongly supporting existing departmental research strengths. Interest and experience in international activities and fund raising are highly desirable. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, and the position is a five-year term and reappointment is permitted.

For a full consideration, qualified persons are requested to submit the following: a letter of application; comprehensive curriculum vitae, including names, addresses, telephone numbers, fax, and e-mail addresses, if available, of five references; a statement of vision and goals for the Department and leadership philosophy. References will be contacted only upon approval of the applicant. Nominations of outstanding potential candidates for the position are welcomed. An early statement of interest or personal contact with the Chairman of the Search Committee before submitting a full application is highly recommended. The committee will begin reviewing applications after September 30, 2010 and applications should be received by that date.
