President Sung-Chul Shin visiting Pakistani Embassy

President Sung-Chul Shin paid a visit to H.E. Ambassador Mumtaz Zahra Baloch at the embassy of Pakistan in Seoul on September 24. President Shin and Ambassador Baloch exchanged thoughts on expanding the cooperation between Korea and Pakistan in the fields of science and technology.

Ambassador Baloch said, “I was greatly impressed by President Shin’s vision of fostering global leaders and global-inclusive growth on my visit to KAIST earlier in June. From the facilities to the status of the school, I was convinced that Pakistani students educated at KAIST will grow to be the leaders of science and technology when they return home to Pakistan.”

“I hope that more Pakistani science and engineering talents will be able to receive excellent education from KAIST, and would like to ask for support and interest in establishing a science and technology university in Pakistan, benchmarking KAIST,” she added.

President Shin responded saying, “KAIST strives for the growth and prosperity of humanity, not only in Korea but as a whole, through the development of science and technology.”

“We have a dream of establishing 10 KAISTs around the world, starting with the construction of the Kenya Institute of Science and Technology, and will actively cooperate for the establishment of a university like KAIST in Pakistan,” he explained.

Three KAIST professors, Professor Jong Chul Ye from the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering, Professor Hyochoong Bang from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, and Professor Dongsu Han from the School of Computing, accompanied President Shin on the visit.

The conversation was also attended by Defence Attaché Naveed Ahmad Abbas, Commercial Counselor  Imran Razzaq, and Consul of Social Welfare Muhammad Shafiq Haider.

Currently, 51 Pakistani students are enrolled at KAIST, 16 of whom receive KAIST scholarships for foreign students and government-sponsored scholarships from the National Institute of International Education (NIIED). To date, a total of 219 students from Pakistan have graduated from KAIST.
