On September 10, President Sung-Chul Shin hosted a meeting to envision “The Future of KAIST for the World” at the faculty lounge of the KAIST Academic Cultural Complex.
The meeting was attended by Chairman Woo Sik Kim of the Board of Trustees, Dean Sang Yup Lee of KAIST Institute, Associate Vice President Seung Seob Lee of the Global Leadership Center, Associate Professor Seung-Hee Lee from the Department of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Jung Ho Lee from the Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering, and CSO Byeong-Gyu Chang of the KRAFTON Inc. and an alumnus of KAIST.
“This discussion is a very meaningful one,” said President Shin in his greetings. “Those who represent all three generations of Korea’s scientific and technological community are here today to look back on KAIST’s past half-century in celebration of its 50th anniversary and discuss the directions for its development in the future.”
President Shin continued by introducing the major achievements of KAIST in its last 50 years. “KAIST could fulfil its duty as a mission-oriented university through training talented individuals and research and development,” he explained. “From now, KAIST must take a leap to become a university leading not only the country but the world, under the vision ‘Global Value-Creative Leading University’,” he stressed.
President Shin said, “To realize KAIST’s vision, we need education and research, and the commercialization of technology, along with innovative globalization.” He then shared views with the attendees on strategies for innovation by category, including the construction of a training system for global creative fusion leaders and innovation in the research support system for the production of world-class research outcomes.
President Shin concluded the meeting saying that “the contents of today’s discussion will be included in the KAISTian Newsletter, whose first issue will be published in September. It will be an important historical document for our institution.”
