[Main Campus(Daejeon)] 2024 Spring Semester Course Registration Guide

Please refer to the following procedures and methods for Spring semester courses registration.

All maticulating students, enrolled students and students expected to return to school should complete course registration within the course registration period or the course Add/Drop period. Please note that students cannot apply for classes after the course Add/Drop period

Also, if you apply for a credits under the minimum required credit per semester, you will get an academic warning. Also, undergraduate students who have completed graduation requirement credits except for AU should also register at least 1 credit to avoid academic warning due to not registering any courses.

* 2024 Spring Semester begins on Monday, February 26.

1. Course registration period

A. Course registration period : 12:30 on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024 ~ before 23:59 on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024


B. Registration is open for all current students(Undergraduates, Master's and Ph.D. students), all matriculating graduate students(Undergraduates, Master's and Ph. D. students), and returning students(Undergraduates, Master's and Ph.D. students expected to return to school for 2024 Spring Semester)


C. Course registration : Portal(http://portal.kaist.ac.kr)⇒ Academic System⇒ Courses Offered (Randomly selected system)


D. Procedure : ① Honor Code ② Check the class lists on Web⇒ ③ Register for classes on Web (not available on mobile equipment)

※ Log on to Portal(http://portal.kaist.ac.kr)

① [Honor Code Pledge] : At the main page of academic system, online signature is available to enhance sense of ethics and responsibility ( *Signature is required once to use Academic System(Course Registration etc)).

E. Opening hours of course registration system
<Before random selection>

※ From January 8(Mon) 12:30 to before 23:59, open enrollment without ceilings for all the courses.

 January 9(Tue) : No registration is possible.

→ Students will be randomly selected for the courses that exceed their enrollment ceilings; Randomly selected students list for the courses will be announced. (on portal before 18:00 p.m.)

→ Courses of students who are not selected will be automatically deleted on their system.
<After random selection>

 From January 10(Wed) 12:30 to before January 12(Fri) 23:59, students may register for the remaining courses on a first-come first-serve basis.


F. Choose courses to apply P/NR grade marking
1) Applicability
  - Undergraduate students admitted in 2023 or later
  - First two enrolled regular semesters
  - Up to 9 credits per semester from among enrolled courses
2) How to
  - Choose courses to apply P/NR grade marking during Course registration period and Course Add/Drop period.
  - Academic System ⇒ <Class Enrolment> Click ⇒ 'Course Registration' Click ⇒ Click "P/NR" on the right side of 'Course Add/Drop' ⇒ Select Add/Cancel from the list.

G. Matters to be attended while registering courses
1) Students must apply for courses during the given period only.
In the case of the first semester of freshmen in the undergraduate program, the academic registrar's team will assign the Basic Required courses.
- If you are not assigned to General Physics Lab 1, General Biology, and Introduction to Programming, you must apply and complete the courses in the next semester.
- If you check the assigned individual timetable(1/7~) and want to change or add it, you must proceed from the course registration menu or course registration(exception) menu

2) Students included in the randomly selected list(of the courses exceed their enrollment ceilings) can not cancel the courses during the course registration period. (However, during the Add/drop period, students may change or cancel their classes.)

3) [Undergraduate] Students must take required EFL courses within first FOUR(4) SEMESTERS after entering KAIST.

(※ After fourth semester, enrollment in EFL courses is NOT allowed during Spring/Fall semester.)

4) Registration for elective general courses in humanities &social science : limited to 4 subjects when courses are randomly selected.

5) When undergraduate students register for the retake courses on the Academic system, you must obtain the course professor’s approval online up to three days before the end of the course add/drop period.

① Online course retake approval period : Course registration period and no later than 23:59 on three days before the end of the course add/drop period. Please be aware that if you fail to obtain approval by the deadline, your retake course registration will be cancelled automatically.

 When the online course retake application has been denied by the course professor or automatically cancelled due to non-approval within the deadline : Students are requested to submit the form(* Academic Form No.45_Course Add/Drop Application &Confirmation for Course Retake (Undergraduate)) to the Academic Registrar's Team (ART) during the course add/drop period.


2. Course Add/Drop period

A. Course Add/ Drop period : 9:30 on Monday, February 19, 2024 ~ before 23:59 on Monday, March 4, 2024

※ You can apply for the courses even if you didn't apply for any courses during the previous application course registration period.(within enrollment limit)

※ Class operation types : Please check [Academic System] >‘Courses Offered’> ‘Course Title’> ‘memo’


B. How to : Log on to Portal(http://portal.kaist.ac.kr)⇒ Academic System⇒ ’Class Enrolment’ Click→ Add new classes or drop/change classes at ‘Course Registration’ or ‘Course Registration(Exceptions)’ Menu. (not available on mobile equipment)

1) ‘Course Registration’ menu : Select Course→ Add Courses with ‘Application’ button or Drop the courses with ‘Delete’ button

※ Additional function to make ‘Wish List’ for desired courses: By adding a "wish" button in the list of courses offered at course registration menu, students can make and save a course wish list. The saved wish list will be displayed at the top of the list when viewing the offered courses.

2) ‘Course Registration(Exceptions)’ menu : Select Course→ Select Application Type &Application Reason→ Click Confirm Request

※ If the approval of the course instructor is required, such as a special lecture with different subtitle or courses exceeding enrolment limit, use the Course Registration(Exception) menu.

※ ‘Course registration(exception) menu’ will be closed at February 28(Thur), 2024, which is two days before the course Add/Drop period ends. Applications that remain unapproved until two days before the course Add/Drop period ends will be automatically cancelled. Students must take the necessary measures before the deadline.


C. Opening hours of course registration system

[Graduate] From 09:30 on Feb. 19(Mon) to before 23:59 on Mar. 4(Mon)

→ Course Add/Drop available all time during the period

[Undergraduate] During the course Add/Drop period, you can add and drop at any time except for the 1st and 2nd processing time of course cancellation.

1st time(Course Add/Drop) : 09:30~ 17:00

- 1st Processing time of course cancellation : 17:00~ 17:30

2nd time(Course Add/Drop) : 17:30~ Next day 09:00

- 2nd Processing time of course cancellation : 09:00~ 09:30

Last day 2nd time(Course Add only: 17:30~ 23:59

※ Course Add/Drop is not allowed during the processing time of course cancellation(twice a day) and the overall calculation and placement of the canceled courses are made during the time. After the processing time, students can check the remaining open spots again and register for remaining courses on a first come first served basis.

※ Cancellation not possible at second time on the last day. Please note that students who wish to register for courses of which class times clash with their class timetable should drop the courses during the final time slot for course drop because the last day of the course Add/Drop period ends with course registration following a time slot for course drop.


D. Matters to be attended

1) Students must apply for courses during the given period only.

2) Online application system requires a portal access (with PORTAL ID)

3) [Undergraduate] When you register for the retake courses on the Academic system, you must obtain the course professor’s approval online up to three days before the end of the course add/drop period.

① Online course retake approval period : No later than 23:59 of three days before(2/27. Tue)the end of the course Add/Drop period. Please be aware that if you fail to obtain approval by the deadline, your retake course registration will be cancelled automatically.

② When the online course retake application has been denied by the course professor or automatically cancelled due to non-approval within the deadline : Students must re-apply for retake at the Course Registration(Exceptions) menu, or submit the application from to the Academic Registrar's Team(ART) with the approval of the professor in charge by hand(Academic Form No.45_‘Course Add/Drop Application &Confirmation for Course Retake (Undergraduate)) or e-mail during the course add/drop period(3/4. Mon).

※ For undergraduate retake course, students must pay separate tuition fee(50,000kw per 1 credit or 1 AU). If you don’t pay for tuition fee during the payment period for Spring semester(3.5 (Tue) 12:00~ 3.12(Tue) 23:59), retake course will be cancelled. 

4) Since the online system recognizes the Special Topics with different subtitles as a single course, you can register the course as different one by applying it at 'Course Registration(Exception)' Menu or by submitting Course Add/drop form with the signature of the course professor to Academic Registrar's Team during Course Add/drop period.(→ Refer to “Taking Special Courses” at Course Bulletin)

※ [Undergraduate] In case the Special Topics course subtitles are different from each other, up to 4 courses can be recognized as graduation credit.(Special Topics in Humanities and Social Sciences are counted separately). Total of 5 courses can be recognized as graduation credits for students with double major, but only up to 4 special topic courses can be recognized as graduation credits offered by one department/major( Applicable to all enrolled students / Expansion of the number of special courses recognized).
[Mater's] A total of 9 credits of special courses are allowed to be taken in master's program.

5) Individual research credits can be recognized up to 12 credits per semester as determined by the student's advisor, and up to a total of 15 credits.

※ In the case of individual research in the undergraduate program1 credit is allocated to each individual research. If you wish to apply for two or more individual research in the same semester, you can apply for one at the course registration menu, and the others at the course registration (exception) menu with the approval of the professor in charge.

※ If it is not the same semester, it is allowed to apply for individual research again from the same professor.

6) After the course registration and add/drop period, one will get academic warning if the final credits registered per semester falls below the minimum credit specified for each program. Students with only AU or no course registered will be expelled from school.( School regulation Article 34, 67, 86, Guidelines on Curriculum Management Article 15, Guidelines on Enrollment and Course Registration Procedures Article 4.)

※ [Undergraduate] The number of credits undergraduate students can take each semester is between 12 and 24 credits. However, below are some exceptions(→ Refer to article 15 of Guidelines on Curriculum Management)

 Students can register more than 24 credits with ‘GPA 3.0 and more’ of last semester.( with confirmation of advisor and the head of the department at Course Registration(Exception) menu)

② Students under 12 credits left for graduation can register less than 12 credits with an approval of their academic advisor and the head of their department.(→ exempt from academic warning)

※ [Class Enrolment] → [Course Registration] menu → "Application/confirmation for registering less than 12 credits for graduation semester" → Fill in the Reason → Click "Apply" → Obtain approval from Advisor and Department Head → Check Online (Should be completed within course withdrawal period)(Proceed with the approval process when your course registration list is fixed.)

※ [Graduate] Master's/doctoral students must apply for at 9~12 credits(Full-time), 1~9 credits(Part-time) per semester, including research credits. However, student can apply for up to 18 credits(Full-time), 12 credits(Part-time) when recommended by the advisor and approved by the department head.

 

3. Course Withdrawal period

A. Course Withdrawal period : Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at 12:30 p.m.~ Friday, April 12, 2024 at 23:59 p.m.

※ Undergraduate students(who matriculated in 2007, 2008) and graduate students(who matriculated in 2008 or before) : 2024. March 5(Tue)~ 2024. April 26(Fri)


B. How to : Log on to Portal(http://portal.kaist.ac.kr)⇒ Academic System⇒ ‘Class Enrolment’ Click→ Drop classes at ‘Course Registration’ or ‘Course Registration(Exceptions)’ Menu. (not available on mobile equipment)

1) ‘Course Registration’ menuClick Delete to withdraw courses

2) ‘Course Registration(Exceptions)’ menu : Select Course→ Select Application Type(Select Course Withdrawal Registration)→ Select Application Reason→ Other Information(Fill in additional information if necessary)→ Click Confirm Request

※ If the approval of the course instructor is required, such as Cancellation of AP, graduation semester or other reasons, use the Course Registration(Exception) menu.

※ ‘Course registration(exception) menu’ will be closed at April 9(Tue), 2024, which is two days before the course Add/Drop period ends. Applications that remain unapproved until two days before the course Add/Drop period ends will be automatically cancelled. Students must take the necessary measures before the deadline.


C. Matters to be attended

1) The grade of a withdrawn course is not included in students' grade point average; students are given a "W" (withdrawal) on their transcripts.

(→ Should students retake the “W” given courses, "W" grades on their transcripts will be deleted.)

2) Total number of credits for the remaining courses after the course add/drop period. (→ Reference : School regulation article 67, Guidelines on Curriculum Management article 15, Guidelines on Enrollment and Course Registration Procedures article 4)

 Every full-time graduate student has to take minimum of 9 credits each semester(Part time 1 credit).

 Undergraduate students have to take minimum of 12 credits each semester.

※ However, this shall not apply to undergraduate students who have earned more than 136 credits(130 credits for students entered in 2015 or before and didn’t complete Advanced major or Individually designed major).

* [Class Enrolment] → [Applied courses] menu → "Application/confirmation for registering less than 12 credits for graduation semester" → Fill in the Reason → Click "Apply" → Obtain approval from Advisor and Department Head → Check Online (Should be completed within course withdrawal period)(After your course registration list is fixed, complete the approval process within course withdrawal period.)
