Play Games With No Latency
One of the most challenging issues for game players looks to be resolved soon with the introduction of a zero-latency gaming environment. A KAIST team developed a technology that helps game players maintain zero-latency performance. The new technology transforms the shapes of game design according to the amount of latency. Latency in human-computer interactions is often caused by various factors related to the environment and performance of the devices, networks, and data processing. The term ‘lag’ is used to refer to any latency during gaming which impacts the user’s performance. Professor Byungjoo Lee at the Graduate School of Culture Technology in collaboration with Aalto University in Finland presented a mathematical model for predicting players' behavior by understanding the effects of latency on players. This cognitive model is capable of predicting the success rate of a user when there is latency in a 'moving target selection' task which requires button input in a time constrained situation. The model predicts the players’ task success rate when latency is added to the gaming environment. Using these predicted success rates, the design elements of the game are geometrically modified to help players maintain similar success rates as they would achieve in a zero-latency environment. In fact, this research succeeded in modifying the pillar heights of the Flappy Bird game, allowing the players to maintain their gaming performance regardless of the added latency. Professor Lee said, "This technique is unique in the sense that it does not interfere with a player's gaming flow, unlike traditional methods which manipulate the game clock by the amount of latency. This study can be extended to various games such as reducing the size of obstacles in the latent computing environment.” This research, in collaboration with Dr. Sunjun Kim from Aalto University and led by PhD candidate Injung Lee, was presented during the 2019 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems last month in Glasgow in the UK. Hanmaeum Education Corps Invites Multicultural Families
About 100 graduates from the Multicultural Mother Schools and their families visited the KAIST campus on October 29 at the invitation of the Hanmaeum Education Corps of KAIST. The Hanmanum Education Corps is a volunteering organization composed of KAIST faculty and students. Many retired KAIST faculties are also members of the corps. Byong Kyu Choi, an Emeritus Professor from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, is the director of the corps and has been leading the event since 2015. With the support of a KAIST educational volunteering organization called SEED(Social Education Embracing Diversity), this year’s event offered various activities including a treasure hunt and convergent science programs. Participants had the opportunity to experience KAIST’s educational environment and enjoyed the perfect autumn weather during outdoor activities with student volunteers. Children enjoyed making illumination-music stickers with the KAIST students, even though it was tough to learn at first. While the children engaged themselves in the science program, parents visited the chrysanthemum fair and some of KAIST’s cafeterias. Hanmaeum Education Corps opened the Multicultural Mother Schools to support multicultural mothers so that they can have more interest in and help their children more with their education. Since its establishment in 2015, the Multicultural Mother Schools have been expanding throughout the country. The corporation hopes that visiting a renowned university will encourage children from multicultural families to study hard in addition to offering self-enrichment opportunities through career exploration and science activities.

NPKI Launch Workshop Held
Molecular Physics Department Expected to Have ‘NPKI’ Launch Workshop - Numerous physicists tracking the god-particle ‘Higgs’ attending- The NPKI: New Physics at Korea Institute which was launched a six day workshop in Shinla Hotel, Seoul with 50 physicists from in and out of the country. The event started with Professor Gi Woon Choi’s welcoming speech. A heated debate with the theme ‘Top physics and electroweak symmetry breaking in the LHC era’ took place in the event. NPKI was created this year to search into the most fundamental workings of nature, research the meaning of such mechanisms, and share this knowledge with not only the general public, but also with the teenagers who wish to someday become physicists. Professor Gi Woon Choi from KAIST, Professors Byoung Wong Ko and Eung Jin Jeon from the Advanced Science Institute, and more are participated in this workshop from Korea. From abroad, world renowned professors such as Prof. Csaba Csaki from Cornell, Prof. Christophe Grojean from CERN, Prof. Erez Etzion from Tel Aviv University of Israel, and Prof. Zoltan Ligeti from UC Berkley participated in this event. The ‘Seeds Program’ took place. This is a program where 20 high school and middle school students aspiring to become physicists were able to attend the work shop without any due fee to experience the world of physicists. The students chosen for the program were able to attend the conference to watch debates of real physicists as well as experience the academic lives of physicists. They were also able to attend the lecture conducted by Prof. Gilad Perez from CERN and were granted question and answer sessions as well.
