KAIST Inks Agreement with KERI for EEWS Technological Cooperation
KAIST concluded an agreement with the Korea Institute of Energy Research for technological cooperation in the research on the four global issues of energy, environment, water and sustainability (EEWS) on Tuesday (April 15). The agreement was signed by KAIST President Nam-Pyo Suh and Moon-Hee Han, director of the Korea Institute of Energy Research at the KAIST. The agreement calls for building a cooperative network for exchanges of personnel and information, and joint use of research facilities and equipment between the two institutions. Under the agreement, KAIST and KIER will also jointly conduct scientific researches. When it comes to personnel exchange, KAIST will appoint researchers of KIER as adjunct professors of KAIST, while KIER will appoint KAIST professors as its adjunct researchers. Undergraduate students of KAIST will be given an opportunity to join government-commissioned projects and participate in an internship program of the institute.

KAIST, K-Water Sign MOU for Cooperation in EEWS
KAIST has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-Water), a state-invested organization responsible for the development and management of inland water resources, for cooperation in the research on the four global issues of energy, environment, water and sustainability (EEWS). The MOU was signed by KAIST President Suh Nam-Pyo and K-Water President Kwak Kyul-ho on Feb. 22 at the KAIST. KAIST and K-Water agreed to establish a cooperative network for exchanges of personnel and research resources for advanced R&D on EEWS. The agreement has been reached on the common belief that EEWS is the most imminent problem facing the humanity in the 21st century. Under the MOU, KAIST and K-Water will work together to build a EEWS global network; to develop policies and conduct researches to strengthen the competitiveness of Korea"s water industry; and to train and exchange research manpower of the two institutions. The agreement also calls for sharing technological information, exchanging research results and publications; and jointly hosting symposiums and workshops.

KAIST, Hynix Agree to Cooperate in Fostering Skilled Manpower
KAIST and Hynix Semiconductor, the world’s second largest producer of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, have agreed to promote bilateral cooperation in fostering highly skilled manpower for the semiconductor industry. A signing ceremony was held on Jan. 21 in Seoul. The agreement marked an expansion of the scope of cooperation between the two organizations into the system IC industry. Since 1995, KAIST and Hynix have cooperated in fostering human resource specialized in the memory semiconductor area, bringing up a total of 250 highly skilled personnel in the area so far. Under the new agreement, Hynix will provide financial support, including scholarships, to KAIST for the next five years. The number of students subject to the Hynix-financed program will be increased to 20 a year from the current 10. New material engineering and physics will be added to the areas covered by the cooperation program.

KAIST and Carnegie Mellon University establish a Dual Degree Program
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and Carnegie Mellon University make an agreement on collaboration in research and education, and a dual degree program. KAIST and Carnegie Mellon make an agreement on ▲Exchange of Faculty Members ▲Exchange of Students ▲Dual Degree Program and ▲ Exploring cooperation in education and research. Presidents of both Universities had a signing ceremony at 11 A.M on Friday, Oct. 5th, 2007. ▲Lectures, joint research and exchange of faculty members ▲Undergraduate/graduate student exchange up to five students from one University each year ▲Dual degree program at the Ph. D. level ▲Opportunities for joint research projects and conferences will be explored according to the agreement between the two Universities. KAIST and Carnegie Mellon have created a new dual degree program for Ph.D. students in civil and environmental engineering. Students admitted through the dual degree program are required to spend minimum 2 academic years in residence at each University. The total number of the student candidates participating in this program shall not exceed five in any given academic year initially. The students who met the graduation requirements shall be awarded two PhD degrees, one from KAIST and the other from Carnegie Mellon. All of its courses at KAIST are taught in English, which is the case starting in Fall 2007. Both Universities will explore the concept of sharing courses taught in English using videoconferencing technologies. KAIST President Nam Pyo Suh said “We are delighted to have President Jared L. Cohon of Carnegie Mellon visit KAIST. I am looking forward to discussing various issues related to higher education and signing the Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities for student/faculty exchange programs, joint research, and the Carnegie Mellon- KAIST dual-degree program in civil and environment engineering. The dual degree program will initially begin in civil and environment engineering, and we hope to expand this to other areas in the future. Our goal is to generate future leaders who are able to lead global enterprises and conduct interdisciplinary research. This can be done through collaboration among leading scholars at Carnegie Mellon and KAIST. Our hope is that we can solve serious problems of the 21st century through the collaboration between our two institutions. Cooperation Agreement with Ajou Motor College
Cooperation Agreement with Ajou Motor College KAIST Graduate School of Automobile Technology to sign a cooperation agreement with Ajou Motor College KAIST Graduate School of Automobile Technology (GSAT) signed a cooperation agreement with Ajou Motor College (AMC) on July 18th. Under the agreement, the both schools will share education and research facilities and promote mutual cooperation for joint education and researches. Lawmaker Geun-Chan Ryu, KAIST Vice President of Budget & Planning Ji-Won Yang, GSAT Dean Suck-Joo Na, AMC Dean Soo-Hoon Lee, etc. attended the ceremony.

KAIST and Samsung Electrics Signs Cooperation Agreement
- Industry-Academy cooperation program for enhancing global competitiveness and for obtaining new growth momentum - Two research institutes - Power Electronics Institute and Packaging Institute - open in KAIST- Fostering customized experts through researcher reeducation, field experiences, etc. KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) and Samsung Electronics (President Ho-Moon Kang) will be promoting industry-academy cooperative activities to enhance their global competitiveness and to obtain new growth momentum. The both parties singed the agreement at KAIST conference room 1 on April 10, Tuesday, and two new research institutes - Power Electronics Institute (PEI) and Packaging Institute (PI) -opened this day. As a result, KAIST holds three research institutes managed in cooperation with Samsung Electronics, including the Radio Technology Institute (RTI) which was opened in 2005. The PEI aims to develop power supply devices for high-efficiency and high-power servers of flat display power supply, and will foster customized experts through researcher reeducation and field experiences. The PI will foster experts for improving packaging qualities and for developing next-generation technologies. Packing technologies are in the core field of electronics part industries which is going for integrating, systemizing and modulization. “I’m sure outstanding industry-academy researches and student education will raise the standings of the both bodies, and I promise generous support to produce further significant research results,” said KAIST President Suh. “This cooperation program will become an example of successful industry-academy cooperation. I’m expecting KAIST will become a trustworthy partner for Samsung Electronics to jump into one of the world’s top-class enterprises,” said Samsung Electronics President Kang.

KAIST-Oracle Korea agrees on industry-academy cooperation
- To establish ERP systems throughout the entire fields of KAIST to provide advanced education and research services - To perform Joint R&D in the field of ubiquitous- Agreement signed at KAIST on April 5 KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) and Oracle Korea (President Sam-Soo Pyo) signed an agreement on the industry-academy cooperation program for the establishment and joint researches of advanced education services system on April 5 at 11 am. KAIST and Oracle Korea will establish an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system ‘ORACLE People Soft (PSFT) Campus Solution’ at KAIST. ‘PSFT Campus Solution’ refers to a university-oriented ERP system dominating world market share and will be introduced to KAIST for the first time among Korean universities. The establishment of ERP system and next-generation web services throughout KAIST will enhance KAIST’s management abilities over education and research, thereby making possible the offering of advanced education services. The both also agreed to promote joint researches in the field of ubiquitous. Major cooperation items are ▲ the establishment and operation of ERP systems, ▲ the creation of advanced education services model for universities in Korea and East Asia and the setting-up of foundation for standard information services, ▲ the exploration of and participation in joint concerns, ▲ the establishment of joint information association for the exchanges of science and technology information, ▲ joint researches and development projects by the both parties, and ▲ education and training for the advancement of education institutes. “The cooperation with world-class IT corporate Oracle can produce significant fruits of human power fostering and technology development in advanced fields,” KAIST President Nam-Pyo Suh said. “The industry-academy cooperation by Oracle having a variety of world’s top IT technologies and KAIST will be a stepping stone for the advancement of domestic education institutes. Foreign R&D Centers Cropping Up Here
Korea Times / 2004. 03. 26 By Kim Tae-gyu Staff ReporterThe world"s top companies and research institutes are rushing to Korea to set up research and development (R&D) centers. The Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) on Thursday said it isunder negotiation with several world-renowned firms or foundations,including University of Cambridge Cavendish Laboratory, Novartis, DuPont and EMC.The Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) is also lookingto attract five to six multinational companies to establish R&D centers here this year. Korea has already become a home for R&D institutes from top-tier foreign outfits like the world"s No.1 computer-chip maker Intel Corp. and Paris-based medical foundation Institut Pasteur as well as Germany"s Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The MOST said Cavendish will exchange a memorandum of understandingto set up a joint research center here together with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) as early as this May. The two entities will join hands to accelerate knowledge in the fields of nanotechnology, optical technology and physics to name a few,a MOST official said.It also seeks to invite Swiss-based pharmaceutical group Norvatis toestablish an R&D center here on occasion of the medical symposium that will take place here from March 31. The Fortune 500 company is expected to dispatch dozens of high-ranking staff to the two-day neuroscience convention. The Korea Foundation for International Cooperation of Science and Technology (KICOS), an affiliate of MOST, expects a few American companies, including DuPont, to open shop here.``DuPont is likely to make a decision, and we are currently under negotiations with several big companies like EMC,"" KICOS official KimKey-hyup said. EMC is the world"s third-largest maker of data-storage devices.Seoul seeks to host six high-tech information-technology (IT) research centers this year. Up to now, Intel and Fraunhofer committed themselves to setting up research centers here, and IBM will likely open an R&D center as soonas its affiliate IBM Korea"s bribe scandal regarding a government contract is settled. Such high-profile companies as Microsoft, Hewlett Packard and Qualcomm are welcome to open R&D centers in Korea, an MIC official said. The government is willing to provide financial incentives to foreignR&D centers.
