"Software Welcomes Girls" Camp at KAIST
KAIST’s Department of Computer Science organized a software (SW) training camp from January 25-29, 2015 in the Creative Learning Building on campus to promote talented women for the field of information technology (IT). Hosted by the National Information Society Agency in Korea and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, the training camp was comprised of a junior program to educate primary and secondary school students along with teachers and parents, while university students, software developers, and female professionals who had interrupted their careers participated in a senior camp. In the junior camp, participants learned how to employ Scratch and App Inventor as well as microprocessors by using Arduino and Raspberry Pi. During the camp, students including those from multicultural families attended lectures from professors and software designers and received a career consulting session from them. The conference organizers will provide long-term mentoring for the primary and secondary school students by graduate student participants and other volunteer experts. The senior camp consisted of a program entitled “More Women, Better SW!” and a special lecture on “Women in SOS (Software Optimization Services)” took place at Google Korea. University students, teachers, and SW developers had an opportunity to design applications intended to improve daily living. At the “Women in SOS” program, Professor Alice Oh of KAIST and other industry experts gave talks about successful women IT personnel and digital literacy. One of the organizers, Professor Yoon-Joon Lee from the Computer Science Department said, “Software-centered societies in the future will demand delicate intuition and cooperative leadership, which are characteristics of women.” He added that “I hope more women become interested in this field through this event.”

The Hancom and KAIST Research Center Opens
KAIST and Hancom, Inc., an office suite developer in Korea, established a joint research center to develop software technology and its related industry. President Steve Kang of KAIST, Sang-Chul Kim, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hancom, and professors from the computer science department at KAIST attended a ceremony to celebrate the opening of the center. KAIST and Hancom signed a memorandum of understanding in April this year for the development of software industry in Korea, and based on the agreement, the two institutions identified five research projects and created a research center to implement them effectively. President Kang said, “I hope that the research center will serve as a good example of university and industry collaboration. To that end, we will provide our support to the maximum extent possible to lead the software industry in Korea. We are also planning to hold a joint workshop on the latest trends in software technology and on the education of software developers.” Established in 1990, Hancom created the native word processor for the Korean language called “Hangul.”

KAIST and University of California, Santa Cruz, Agree to Cooperate
KAIST and the University of California in Santa Cruz signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the KAIST campus on October 14, 2014. The two institutions agreed to cooperate in the following four areas: - Research collaboration in genomics and biology - Academic exchanges in engineering and information communication technology - Student and faculty exchange programs - Joint academic workshops and seminars Following the MOU signing ceremony, Dr. George Blumenthal, the Chancellor of UC Santa Cruz, held a special seminar for KAIST students and faculty, during which he shared some of the success stories made through UC Santa Cruz’s close cooperation with companies in Silicon Valley. President Steve Kang of KAIST praised the MOU saying, “KAIST and UC Santa Cruz have top-notch research professionals, and the MOU will reinforce their research capability. We hope that the two universities will carry out many research projects that bring significant impact on the world.” UC Santa Cruz was established in 1965 as a public research university committed to undergraduate education. The university has a total student population of 16,000 (15,375 undergraduates and 1,378 graduates). Offering 60 undergraduate majors, UC Santa Cruz's faculty includes six recipients of Pulitzer Prizes and five MacArthur Genius Awards. The university was ranked the 2nd in the world for research influence in 2012-2013 Times Higher Education rankings.

QS World University Rankings 2014: KAIST ranked 17th in Engineering and Technology
The QS World University Rankings 2014 were released on October 16, 2014. KAIST ranked 51st among the top 100 global universities which included Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, Harvard University, and University of Oxford. This year’s QS ranking is the highest record ever achieved by KAIST, a great leap from last year’s 60th. KAIST’s forte in engineering and technology remains high, ranking 17th out of hundreds of universities around the world. Since 2004, KAIST has kept the number one place in this subject within Korea. Since first being compiled in 2004, the QS rankings have expanded to feature more than 800 universities around the world, and the top 400 universities are given individual ranking positions. The rankings are compiled based on six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international student ratio, and international staff ratio. KAIST has earned high scores in three indicators: citations per faculty, academic reputation, and employer reputation. President Steve Kang of KAIST said, “With concerted efforts made by all members of the KAIST community, faculty and students in particular, we have received a good result in the global rankings. Without dwelling on this result, we will continue to strive toward making KAIST one of the most sought-after universities in the world, academically praised and technologically innovative.”

The 2014 CAMPUS Asia Summer Program
The CAMPUS Asia (Collective Action for Mobility Program of University Students in Asia) is an academic exchange program originally proposed at the third presidential meeting of three nations, Korea, China, and Japan, which was held in May 2010 on Jeju Island. Under the proposal, three science and technology universities, Tsinghua University (China), KAIST (Korea), and Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan), created a program in 2012 for academic and research collaboration, TKT CAMPUS Asia. Since then, each university has been hosting an exchange program in rotation. The 2014 summer program of TKT CAMPUS Asia was held from August 4th through 28th at KAIST. A total of 13 professors from the departments of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and life science, as well as 25 students participated. Under the summer program, three courses in biotechnology, mechanical engineering, and Korean language were offered. The universities gave credits for all courses. As part of TKT CAMPUS Asia, KAIST has also operated a semester study abroad and foreign exchange program and will begin a joint degree program by 2015. Professor Jung Kim of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KAIST said, “Just as the Erasmus Program (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) contributed to the foundation of the European Union, we hope that the CAMPUS Asia will serve a similar goal for a greater Asia.”

ASPIRE League 2014: E-Olympics among Five Asian Universities
About 150 undergraduate students from five leading science and technology (S&T) universities in Asia met at the KAIST campus to attend the E-Olympics on August 7-9, 2014. The E-Olympics began as a student exchange conference held under the Asian Science and Technology Pioneering Institutes of Research and Education (ASPIRE) League, which offers a variety of events, such as workshops, sports matches, lab visits, special lectures, and art performances, to promote academic and research collaborations and cultural sharing between the students of the league member universities. Founded in 2009, the ASPIRE League is a university consortium consisted of five top S&T universities in Asia: KAIST in Korea, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Tsinghua University in China, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, and Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) in Japan. The ASPIRE League aims to provide a knowledge and technology hub for innovation in Asia through the advancement of science and technology and the development of human resources. Since its start, the ASPIRE League has been holding an annual conference with programs for research collaboration, student exchange, educational cooperation, and satellite laboratories among professors, senior managers, and students of the member universities. This year, however, the consortium decided to dedicate the conference to students by holding the E-Olympics. Each university sent 30 students to KAIST for the participation of the E-Olympics. For three days, participating students engaged in discussions and presentations at academic workshops; held athletic games including a relay race, basketball, and a rowing race; and toured a few KAIST laboratories, among them: the E-mobility Research Center, the Bio-imaging and Cell Signaling Research Center, the Mechatronics Systems and Control Center, and the Center of Field Robotics for Innovation, Exploration and Defense. The students also attended a music concert performed by a KAIST student club and a lecture entitled “Entrepreneurship through Global Networking” that emphasized the importance of personnel networking in transferring technological innovation into business opportunities. Chang-Dong Yoo, the Dean of the International Office at KAIST, said, “The E-Olympics will offer students from top science and technology universities in Asia opportunities to interact with each other on a more personal level. I hope that through many of the E-Olympics programs, the students will learn about each other’s culture and academic strength and develop a sense of community to create a “New Asia” by working together.”

BizWorld 2014 Takes Place at the KAIST campus: July 28-August 2, 2014
A multinational student conference on science, technology, and business called “BizWorld 2014 (http://kisa.kaist.ac.kr/bizworld/kaist/)” began on July 28, 2014 and continues through August 2, 2014 at the KAIST campus in Daejeon. Created in 2013 by international students at KAIST, the conference aims to promote entrepreneurship among students within KAIST as well as those from other nations and to exchange knowledge and experiences in translating technological and scientific innovations into business opportunities. The KAIST International Student Association (KISA) hosts the conference in partnership with five universities in the Asia-Pacific region: Peking University in China, National Taiwan University in Taiwan, the University of Tokyo in Japan, National University of Singapore, and the University of Queensland in Australia. This year, four distinguished speakers from the Korean government and private sector will give talks on job creation through science and technology advancement, strategic management of technology, and trends in information technology business. Participating students will also visit laboratories for electric vehicles being developed by KAIST: Armadilo T and the Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV). The Armadillo T is a small, light, and agile electric car that folds its body for an efficient use of space. OLEV can be an electric car, bus, or even a high-capacity train, which is recharged wirelessly while on-the-go. The s tudents will have a Q&A meeting with researchers and discuss a possible business model to commercialize these technologies.

Prime Minister's Prize for KAIST TBIC at 2013 Korean Venture & Business Expo
The KAIST Technology Business Incubation Center (TBIC) received the Prime Minister’s Prize at the 2013 Korean Venture & Business Expo. TBIC started its service in 1994 and was selected as the best center by the Asia Association of Business Incubation (AABI) in 2007. The center has contributed to business incubation for competitive enterprises through consulting, venture capital, educational curriculums, and infrastructure service. It has also encouraged and activated business startups by KAIST students through educational programs and supporting services such as hidden champion buildup, mentoring & networking, startup auditions, and special lecture sessions for entrepreneurship. TBIC has supported 488 businesses since 1994, and 278 companies (57%) are still in business. Eleven companies have been listed on the Korea Stock Exchange through the support of TBIC and eight of them are still on the list as of today. Those companies have been contributing to the national economy with total sales of 1.9 trillion won and in job creation by hiring 5,908 employees.

Cancer detection from an implantable, flexible LED
Professor Keon Jae Lee A KAIST research team has developed a new type of biocompatible and bendable GaN LED biosensor. Daejeon, the Republic of Korea, August 8, 2011—Can a flexible LED conformably placed on the human heart, situated on the corrugated surface of the human brain, or rolled upon the blood vessels, diagnose or even treat various diseases? These things might be a reality in the near future. The team of Professor Keon Jae Lee (Department of Materials Science and Engineering, KAIST) has developed a new concept: a biocompatible, flexible Gallium Nitride (GaN) LED that can detect prostate cancer. GaN LED, a highly efficient light emitting device, has been commercialized in LED TVs and in the lighting industry. Until now, it has been difficult to use this semiconductor material to fabricate flexible electronic systems due to its brittleness. The research team, however, has succeeded in developing a highly efficient, flexible GaN LED and in detecting cancer using a flexible LED biosensor. Prof. Lee was involved in the first co-invention of "High Performance Flexible Single Crystal GaN" during his PhD course at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). This flexible GaN LED biosensor utilized a similar protocol to transfer thin GaN LED films onto flexible substrates, followed by a biocompatible packaging process; the system’s overall potential for use in implantable biomedical applications was demonstrated. Professor John Roger (Department of Materials Science and Engineering, UIUC) said, “Bio-integrated LEDs represent an exciting, new technology with strong potential to address important challenges in human health. This present work represents a very nice contribution to this emerging field.” This paper was published in the online issue of Nano Energy Elsevier Journal (Editor, Prof. Zhong Lin Wang) dated September 16, 2011. Flexible GaN LED produces blue light.
