One Day Idea Hackathon, GoGeeks 2013
GoGeeks Creation Group, founded by KAIST alumni, is hosting the GoGeeks One Day Idea Hackathon 2013 on November 23 at the Microsoft (MS) Building in Seoul. The contest was organized to support creative ideas proposed by college students and help them to be applied in real life.
The first GoGeeks contest was held last year by a group of KAIST undergraduate students, which was influenced by Duke University’s Elevator Pitch Competition, an entrepreneurial competition started in 1999.
Applications for the contest should be submitted on www.gogeeks.co.kr by November 20, and the first 30 groups registered will get to compete in the contest.
Each group will make one-minute presentations after six hours of planning on the theme of “Color Your Society.” Then five-minute presentations will follow by the top ten groups selected from the first stage. The top five groups will be each awarded the prize of 2 million Korean won.
The five selected teams will work on their proposed projects during the winter vacation with support from MS Korea and the Center for Science-based Entrepreneurship at KAIST.

Director of ELK Shin Dong Hyuk Donates 500 million Korean Won over 5 years
KAIST Alumni Director of ELK Shin Dong Hyuk Promised to donate 100million Korean Won annually for 5 years.
Director Shin commented revealed his reason for donating was, “I had received a lot of help from KAIST as a KAIST alumni and was therefore wondering what I could do to help out.” And that “I wish that the donation can help KAIST students who are experiencing financial difficulty”.
He added that, “I wish that the donation becomes the basis on which KAIST students can achieve their dreams and also KAIST students contribute back to KAIST after graduation”.

KAIST Commencement 2010 was held on February 26, 2010.
A total of 2,205 are the newly conferred degree holders: 479 for Ph.D., 988 for Master’s, and 738 for B.S. degrees. Since its foundation in 1971, KAIST has so far produced 38,882 graduates.
KAIST held the 2010 graduation ceremony on February 26, 2010 at its newly built place, called “Sports Complex Building.” Approximately 2,500 guests including Minister Byung-Man Ahn, Education, Science and Technology Ministry; Chairman Mun-Sul Jeong, KAIST Board of Trustees; representatives from the KAIST alumni; graduating students; and faculty joined the ceremony to celebrate the commencement.
Honorary Doctorates
At the ceremony, KAIST has conferred four honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of recipients’ contribution to the advancement of science and technology and development of science and engineering education in Korea and the world. The recipients were Arden L. Bement Jr., Director of US National Science Foundation; Lars Pallesen, President of Technical University of Denmark; Donald C.W. Kim, Chairman of AMKOR A&E, Inc.; and Beang-Ho Kim, Chairman of Seojeon Farm.
Graduation Honors: President’s List
Dong-Han Kim, majoring in Mathematical Sciences, College of Natural Science, was nominated as President’s List. He received an award for an outstanding academic achievement from the Minister of Education, Science and Technology and gave a gradation speech on behalf of the graduating class.
Birthplace of Promising Young Scientists in Korea
KAIST has earned a reputation for training the next generation of young scientists in Korea, and its 2010 Commencement has confirmed such fame. Among 479 Ph.D. degree holders, 151 (31%) students are in their 20s. The youngest who has received a doctoral degree is Jin-Ah Lee, graduating from College of Life Science and Bioengineering.
Commencing International Students
Among international students graduating this year, two students from India received their doctoral degrees in Biological Sciences: Kataru Raghu Prasad and Chaya Mohan. They are a married couple and now both postdoctoral researchers, working at KAIST labs. Wearing academic regalia and standing together to take a picture, the couple said, “We would definitely recommend KAIST to prospective international students because it offers the best education and research facilities comparable to those of any leading universities in the world. With the knowledge and experience acquired from studying at KAIST, we hope to contribute to the development of our country in the future.”

KAIST Alumni Association (Chairman Sam-Soo Pyo, CEO of Oracle Korea) named the recipients of ‘KAIST Alumni Awards of the year 2006’ and conferred the awards at its New Year’s Greetings, which was held at Grand Ballroom in JW Marriott Hotel, Saturday, January 13.
KAIST Alumni Awards of the Year were conferred on ▲ Byung-Kyu Chang, CEO of Cheot-noon Inc., at the young alumni section, ▲ Jin-Gon Kim, Professor of POSTECH, at the academy section, ▲ Sin-Bae Kim, CEO of SK Telecom, at the industry section, and ▲ Sang-Ki Rhee, President of Korea Research Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology (KRIBB), at the society section.
The young alumni section winner Byung-Kyu Chang, Master of KAIST Computer Sciences (Class ‘97), has jointly created Neowiz, Korea’s typical internet venture company, and created Cheot-noon Inc., internet-searching company, to substantially contribute to the development of Korea’s IT industries.
The academy section winner Jin-Gon Kim, Master of KAIST Chemical Engineering (Class ‘82), has made great research achievements in nano field, such as the development of high molecular tube theory, etc.
The industry section winner Sin-Bae Kim, Master of KAIST Industrial Engineering (Class ‘80), has contributed to the development of mobile communication and information system industries with his outstanding technology management capabilities and shown excellent models to junior engineers with his creative managing philosophies.
The society section winner Sang-Ki Rhee, Ph.D of KAIST Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (Class ‘80), has contributed to the development of practicalization technologies in genetic engineering field and the government’s establishment of biotechnology policies, and created large-scaled research performances through management renovation during his reign as the president of KRIBB.
‘KAIST Alumni Award of the Year’, the greatest honor of KAIST alumni, was established in 1992 to encourage alumni’s activities by yearly awarding alumni who contribute to the development of the nation and the society and raise the fame of alma mater.
