QS World University Rankings 2014: KAIST ranked 17th in Engineering and Technology
The QS World University Rankings 2014 were released on October 16, 2014. KAIST ranked 51st among the top 100 global universities which included Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, Harvard University, and University of Oxford. This year’s QS ranking is the highest record ever achieved by KAIST, a great leap from last year’s 60th.
KAIST’s forte in engineering and technology remains high, ranking 17th out of hundreds of universities around the world. Since 2004, KAIST has kept the number one place in this subject within Korea.
Since first being compiled in 2004, the QS rankings have expanded to feature more than 800 universities around the world, and the top 400 universities are given individual ranking positions. The rankings are compiled based on six indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international student ratio, and international staff ratio.
KAIST has earned high scores in three indicators: citations per faculty, academic reputation, and employer reputation.
President Steve Kang of KAIST said, “With concerted efforts made by all members of the KAIST community, faculty and students in particular, we have received a good result in the global rankings. Without dwelling on this result, we will continue to strive toward making KAIST one of the most sought-after universities in the world, academically praised and technologically innovative.”

Gold prize for Sungkoo Yeo and silver prize for Youngsik Kim at ‘Samsung Electrics paper contest’
Sungkoo Yeo, doctorate student at the division of Electrical Engineering, and Youngsik Kim, doctorate students at the division of Mechanical Engineering, won gold and silver prizes respectively at ‘the 2nd Inside edge paper contest’ organized by Samsung Electronics.
Yeo, under the supervisory of Professor Youngse Kwon, won the glory of gold prize in recognition of his highly evaluated researches in the fields of silicon-based micro mold manufacturing technologies and fine shaping technologies revealed by his paper of ‘"Fabrication of Microlens array Using PDMS Replica Molding and Oxidized Porous Silicon Bulk Micromachining’.
Kim, under the supervisory of Professor Seungwoo Kim, also won the silver prize for his research performances over the thickness pattern measuring technologies of transparent thin film coated on the pattern of an opaque metal in the field of optical technology unveiled by his paper of "Dispersive white-light interferometry for in-line inspection of thin-film layers on patterned structures".
Inside Edge paper contest is an academic paper contest organized by Samsung Electronics to reveal the fresh ideas and potential technologies of the young talented.

[Unknown] Wins Program Competition

The 3rd Korean Collegiate Programming Competition took place on November 7 at Sky-city Convention Center, Seoul. This competition is organized by the Ministry of Telecommunication and is sponsored by KAIST, ACM, and Korean Information Science Institution. This year"s preliminary competition consisted of 112 teams from 50 domestic universities, and 53 teams were selected from the preliminaries. In total, sixty teams, including foreign teams, participated in the main competition that took place at the Sky-city Convention Center.
This year"s competition was won by "Unknown" from KAIST; this team is composed of three students: Min-sang Noh, Gih-moon Song, and Joong-geun Lee. Last year"s competition was also won by a team from KAIST.
In this year"s competition, five teams solved all the problems, but "Unknown" was the best in organizing the programs and in employing various concepts into the program. Another team from KAIST, "KIN~" won 4th Prize.
The winner of this competition automatically becomes an Asian representative at the ACM- International Collegiate Programming Competition (ACM-ICPC) along with the winners of collegiate competitions from Japan, China, India, and Iran. The 28th ACM-ICPC is to be held in March 2004.
