College of Business Honored with the WRDS-SSNR Innovation Award

The KAIST College of Business received the WRDS (Wharton Research Data Services)-SSNR Innovation Award for the Asia-Pacific region on October 31 during the AACSB Asia-Pacific Conference in Seoul.
The WRDS-SSRN Innovation Award is intended to elevate the visibility of pioneering research across a broad range of financial and economic topics. Three winners are selected annually from across North America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific based on their ability to demonstrate innovation and research excellence.
The award was created through collaboration with SSRN, the world’s leading early-stage research platform and Elsevier, a global information analytics company specializing in science and health. It honors top business schools that produce exceptional data-driven research. A part of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, WRDS provides global corporations, universities, and regulatory agencies with the thought leadership, data access, and analytics needed to enable impactful research.
The Dean of the College of Business Youngbae Kim, said that KAIST has been taking the lead in responding to global trends, offering many innovative programs such as an MBA for Social Entrepreneurship and the Master Course for Green Growth Management. KAIST already has been selected as the Most Innovative University in the Asia-Pacific Region by Thomson Reuters for the last two years.
Robert Zarazowski, managing director of WRDS said they recognize and support the outstanding achievement taking place at KAIST as well as its commitment to growth and innovation in business education.

'KAIST the Most Innovative University in Asia-Pacific Region'
KAIST topped the most innovative universities ranking in the Asia and Pacific region for the second year in a row in 2017. Thomson Reuters released the second annual ranking of the Asia Pacific regions’ most innovative universities, a list that ranks the top 75 educational institutions doing the most to advance science and invent new technologies.
KAIST earned first place by producing a high volume of influential inventions. KAIST researchers submitted 923 patent filings from 2010 to 2015 and was the most cited in research papers, taking first place out of 75 top-ranked universities in the Asia and Pacific region. Those are key criteria in the rankings compiled in partnership with Clarivate Analytics. The Clarivate Analytics evaluates the institutions on 10 different metrics, focusing on academic paper citations and patent filings.
South Korean universities filled four out of the top five spots in the rankings and eight of the top 20 on the 2017 list. A total of 22 Korean universities were on the list of the top 75. Meanwhile 25 Chinese universities including Hong Kong, and 18 Japanese universities were listed in the rankings.

KAIST Ranked Top in Korea, 8th in Asia in 2017 THE Asia Rankings
KAIST ranked top among Korean universities and 8th in Asia according to the 2017 THE (Times Higher Education) Asia University Rankings published on March 16. This is the first time that KAIST took the top position in Korea in the THE rankings.
The 2017 THE Asia University Rankings rank the top 300 universities in Asia, employing five performance indicators: teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlook.
KAIST jumped two spots from last year to rank first in Korea with outstanding improvements in teaching and research this year, while earning the perfect score for industry income for the second consecutive year.

KAIST, Microsoft Research to Set up Research Collaboration Center
KAIST, Korea"s premier institution for science and technology research and education, and Microsoft Research (MSR), the research arm of Microsoft Corp, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a joint research collaboration center in Korea on Oct. 20.
The research collaboration center to be located at the KAIST campus in the Daedeok science and technology town 150 kilometers south of Seoul will be dedicated to promoting joint researches, curriculum innovation, talent fostering and academic exchange in the Asian region.
The MOU signing ceremony at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul was attended by President Nam-Pyo Suh and Vice President Soon-Heung Chang from KAIST, and Craig Mundie, Chief Research and Strategy Officer of Microsoft Corp, and Hsiao-Wuen Hon, Managing Director of MSR Asia from Microsoft.
“We are excited to be working so closely with Microsoft Research,” KAIST President Suh said. “This is the first of many alliances we hope to establish with the world’s industrial leaders that will enable us to resolve some of the toughest problems in computer science and accelerate the next generation of innovation in computing technology and its application in other scientific researches.”
Dr. Hon said: “For over 10 years, Microsoft Research has been committed to working with leading universities throughout Asia to spur computer science research and to strengthen Asia’s knowledge economies by helping foster their capabilities. The Microsoft-KAIST Research Collaboration Center demonstrates our continued efforts to strengthen relations with universities in Korea and build new partnerships with academia here.”
In the last three years, Microsoft Research and KAIST have engaged in close collaboration through research projects, student support programs, and various academic exchange activities. One of the major projects was to construct software development library specifically dedicated to systems biology. A number of excellent students from KAIST participated in the internship program at Microsoft Research in Beijing, China and Redmond, United States.
The establishment of the Microsoft-KAIST research collaboration center will bring the collaborative relations between KAIST and MSR to a new level. The center will provide a platform which unites the innovative minds of KAIST and Microsoft Research to develop technologies that will impact the way people live, learn, work, and play, a KAIST spokesman said.
