New Members of KAST 2020
< Professor Zong-Tae Bae (Left) and Professor Sang Ouk Kim (Right) > Professor Zong-Tae Bae from the School of Management Engineering and Professor Sang Ouk Kim from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering became new fellows of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) along with 22 other scientists in Korea. On November 22, KAST announced 24 new members for the year 2020. This includes seven scientists from the field of natural sciences, six from engineering, four from medical sciences, another four from policy research, and three from agriculture and fishery. The new fellows will begin their term from January next year, and their fellowships wll be conferred during the KAST’s New Year Reception to be held on January 14 in Seoul. (END)

Professor Hahn Named Sangnam Business Researcher Awardee
Professor Minhi Hahn of the School of Management Engineering at the KAIST College of Business has been named the winner of the 22nd Sangnam Business Researcher Award. The Sangnam Award is the highest distinction made by the Korean Academic Society of Business Administration to recognize an outstanding scholar in the field of business & management for that year. His research focuses on how marketing communication impacts customer choices and their satisfaction. Professor Hahn has served on the faculty of the College of Business since 1989, and has supervised more than 21 Ph.D.s and 203 master’s students while publishing more than 51 papers in domestic and foreign journals. He served as dean of the KAIST College of Business, president of the Korean Marketing Association, and president of the Korean Society of Consumer Studies. Currently Professor Hahn is a board member on the strategic committee of the College of Management at National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan. Professor Hahn said, “I am pleased to receive this award on behalf of the people who are working for the development of Korean business administration. I will do my utmost to support younger scholars to continue their meaningful research." The award ceremony will take place at the Plaza Hotel in Seoul on February 23.

Prof. Jae-Kyu Lee Campaigns on "Bright Internet" Worldwide
Professor Jae-Kyu Lee (pictured on the right) from the College of Business at KAIST is one step closer to fulfilling his dream of achieving the “Bright Internet,” a campaign that he first proposed as he became the president of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) in June 2015. On December 12, 2015, Professor Lee signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at a convention center in Fort Worth, Texas, between the AIS and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)—a specialized agency of the United Nations that is responsible for issues related to information and communication technologies—on a collaborative research and development program to make the Internet safer for everyone. The MOU pursues building a trusted international information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure by proposing telecommunication policies, developing international standards, and organizing interdisciplinary conferences. The Bright Internet is an initiative to protect online users from cyber terrors, privacy breaches, and cyber-crimes. Further, it involves putting accountability to those who initiate or deliver cyber threats, thereby eliminating the possible source of Internet related crimes. Following the MOU agreement, Prof. Lee delivered a speech on his campaign at the 2015 International Conference on Information Systems and received positive responses from the audience. The Bright Internet campaign has been selected as visions of various ICT organizations worldwide including the Korea Society of Management Information System and the International Federation of Information Processing. KAIST and Tsinghua University in China adopted it as an academic topic for research and teaching. Prof. Lee claimed that the Internet should be used in a manner based on the values of trust, ethics, and decorum. He further noted that it is important to build Internet environments that not only protect individuals from cyber threats or attacks, but also hold those who commit online crimes accountable for their actions.

Academic Award Established in the Honor of Professor Jae-gyu Lee
An academic award has been established to celebrate the academic achievements of Jae-gyu Lee, a chair professor at KAIST’s Business and Management Department. The Korean Society of Management Information Systems (KMIS) created the “Safe Internet Jae-gyu Lee Academic Award” at the 2015 KMIS Fall Symposium held on November 21, 2015 at the Business and Management building of Yonsei University in Seoul. The award will be presented to researchers operating both in and outside Korea, who strive to achieve a clean and safe Internet environment by preventing cyber terrors, attacks, and crimes. Appointed as the President of the Association for Information Systems (AIS), a global academic organization to advance the field of information systems, in July 2015, Professor Lee has adopted the “safe and clean Internet culture” as the official vision of the AIS. During his inaugural speech, he urged the international community including AIS to work together for better solutions to cyber problems. For the implementation of the Safe Internet Jae-gyu Lee Academic Award, KMIS plans to form a committee to select winners through evaluations and recommendations. The award will be presented from 2016 forward. Also, Professor Lee has recently donated USD 87,000 to KMIS to fund research in safe Internet culture and cyberspace security.

Professor Jae Kyu Lee Appointed the President of Association for Information Systems
Chair Professor Jae Kyu Lee of KAIST’s College of Business was appointed the President of Association for Information Systems (AIS) on July 1, 2015. Professor Lee will serve a one-year term, which will end in June 2016. With four thousand members researching information systems from 90 different nations, AIS is the largest academic society in the fields of information system and business process engineering. Professor Lee has proposed his idea of “the Bright Internet” as the official vision of AIS. Employing this vision, AIS will create technology and systems, as well as sponsor international cooperation to solve fundamental issues of the Internet including concerns over hacking and cyber-related crimes. The extent of damage from cyber-related crimes grows each year. Every day, 56 billion junk emails are sent to computers which are hacked and become “zombie” computers. The social cost of such crimes is estimated to be 400 billion US dollars annually. Based on "the Bright Internet," AIS will build a preventative Internet security system by adopting ground rules that make attackers responsible for the damages from such crimes. The system will also modify technology and other systems to minimize privacy infringement while maintaining security. Finally, the Bright Internet proposes to adopt an international standard for this security system through collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Professor Lee said, “The vision of the Bright Internet started from an awareness that we needed to resolve issues such as Internet addiction, indiscriminate media exposure, and verbal violence. This vision developed by the experts from all around the world will not only bring a revolution of a reliable Internet platform to a global scale but also reshape the Korean Internet platform.”

Professor Moon Song Chun appointed representative director of European IT society
Professor Moon Song Chun from the College of business at KAIST was appointed as the representative director of Asia for the European IR society EUROMICRO at its 35th general meeting in Lille, France. Professor Moon is highly regarded in his work in popularization of IT in 3rd world countries and has published the largest number of papers in the history of EUROMICRO. For the next two years, Professor Moon will work to introduce Asia’s IT capabilities to the world and to increase the recognition of the society in the region. Professor Moon, who is also known as the first Computer Science Doctor (PhD) in Korea, has worked to popularize IT by initiating IT volunteer services in Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America, South East Asia and Eastern Europe. He has also helped in the recognition of Korea’s IT capacity, working as a Korean Delegate for the UN International Y2K Cooperation Center, a Distinguished Scholar at Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University.

Professor Moon Song Chun Appointed by 'Korean Red Cross
The Korean Red Cross appointed KAIST’s Professor Moon Song Chun (Graduate School of Techno Management). Professor Moon participated in education and support services over the past 20 years like UNDP Expert, KOICA International Service Expert, Y2K Korea Representative (visit 20 third world countries around the world). Professor Moon will start participation in Korean Red Cross in various parts of North Korea and for a period of two years.

International Workshop on EEWS 2010 was held.
On October 7 and 8th at Fusion Hall of KI Building, KAIST, the 2010 International Workshop on EEWS (Energy, Environment, Water, and Sustainability) was held. The third to be held, forty national and international academic professionals including Mark Shannon, professor at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Domen Kazunari, Tokyo University professor, Dong Sub Kim, CTO of SK Energy and Doyoung Seung, Senior Vice President of GS Caltex, participated at this year’s workshop. In twelve sessions, themes including Artificial Photosynthesis, Wireless Power Transfer, Green Aviation, Safe Nuclear Fuel Reuse, Fuel Cells in Action, LED 2.0, Foundation of Energy-Water Nexus, and Flexible Battery & Solar Cell were presented and discussed. “Through this workshop, current EEWS policy and research progress from different countries and the future of related technologies will be foreseen,” said Jae Kyu Lee, Dean of KAIST EEWS Initiative. “I hope it became an opportunity to create cooperative relationships with leading researchers.” EEWS is a research project conducted by KAIST to solve global issues that mankind faces today such as depletion of energy, environmental pollution, water shortage, and sustainability.

KAIST listed 27 research subjects for EEWS.
The Office of EEWS Initiative at KAIST announced 27 research projects to be implemented in 2010. The EEWS stands for energy, environment, water, and suitability. KAIST established the EEWS Office in 2008 in efforts to solve problems facing mankind today such as depletion of natural resources, environment pollution, climate changes, water shortages, and sustainable growth. On the nationwide, the Korean government has taken initiatives to support “green growth” and “green technology” projects. In 2009, the EEWS Office supported 24 research projects and received 28 patent rights, 6 patent registrations, and 57 Science Citation Index (SCI) papers. This year, the office chose 27 research subjects including 7 flagship projects: flexible lithium polymer batteries, spent nuclear fuel recycling, highly efficient bio-butanol, liquid electrolyte battery solid oxide fuel cell, LED lighting, artificial photosynthesis, and nano organic solar cells. New research topics begun this year include energy-saving desalination system and ultra-thin film of silicon solar cells. Jae-Kyu Lee, Dean of EEWS Initiative Office said, “Having multiple volume of small-scaled, topic-focused research projects will encourage us to come up with large-scale convergence research projects. In so doing, we can explore new frontiers of science and technology and serve as the new growth engine for the development of green technology and industry in Korea.” All the research projects selected will be subject to evaluations. For example, the EEWS Initiative Office will host an international workshop in September 2010 where it plans to introduce and evaluate the ongoing research projects.

Computer Security Guru Ahn to Become Chair Professor at KAIST
Chul-Soo Ahn, founder of AhnLab Inc., Korea"s largest computer security company, will become a chair professor of KAIST, university authorities said on Monday (April 7). Ahn, 46, who is currently taking an executive education course at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, will start teaching computer science students this fall. In 1988 when he was a doctorate student at the Medical School of Seoul National University, Ahn developed a computer virus vaccine program and created a sensation in the fledgling computer security market. In 1995, he founded AhnLab and served as CEO for ten years. In 2005, he stepped down as CEO of AhnLab and left for the U.S. Currently, he is serving as chairman of the board of directors of AhnLab. University authorities said that KAIST decided to appoint Ahn as a chair professor in recognition of his profound knowledge in computer technology as well as extensive experiences in corporate management .

Nobel Laureate Heads KAIST By Kim Tae-gyu / Staff Reporter THE KOREA TIMES 05-29-2004 A Nobel laureate will lead the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), winning a stiff race with a pair of strong Korean candidates. The KAIST on Friday said the state-financed institute appointed Robert Laughlin as its 12th president instead of two local hopefuls, professors Shin Seong-cheol and Park Seong-ju. This is the first time that foreigners take charge of the KAIST since it was established in 1971 and Laughlin also is noted in the history as the first Nobel Prize winner to head Korea"s educational institute. After receiving approval of Science-Technology Minister Oh Myung, Laughlin will be inaugurated as early as next month, according to a KAIST official. Laughlin, a Stanford professor, made his name after being co-awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physics with Horst Stoermer and Daniel Tsui for the discovery of a new form of quantum fluid. The findings, which explained the fractional quantum hall effect for the first time, have been recognized as a significant breakthrough in understanding quantum physics. The American physicist had also sustained a special connection with Korea even before he garnered the prestigious prize and has visited Korea several times. Early last month, Laughlin was named to head the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) in recognition of his notable interest in Korea. Personal data found on many used hard drives
JoongAng Daily / 2004.03.09 (photo : Professor Song-chun MoonKAIST Graduate School of Management) Many secondhand computer hard drives that are being sold through the Internet formerly belonged to businesses and are therefore full of business records containing personal information, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), a leading local science and technology school, said yesterday. To determine whether personal information had been properly deleted, the business database research team at KAIST"s business school conducted an experiment in which it randomly bought 41 hard drives through Internet auction sites beginning in April 2003 and analyzed their contents. It said 26 hard drives out of the total, or 65 percent, had not even been reformatted to remove data. On those drives were business records containing the names, birth dates, home and company addresses, telephone numbers and health examination records of 1,349 people. Also, the team found 568 resident identification numbers on the drives. "Secondhand hard disks are an open storehouse of personal information [from business records]," said the team"s head, Moon Young-chul. "We found such personal data for an average of 60 people per used disk." Mr. Moon said that reformatting hard drives alone will not delete all information recorded on them.
