President Kang Welcomes the New Year with an Upbeat Message
KAIST held a kick-off ceremony on January 2 at the Auditorium on campus to officially welcome the beginning of 2017. In his New Year’s speech, President Sung-Mo Kang, who is slated to complete his term in February, recalled some of the major achievements accomplished under his leadership in the past four years. Upon his inauguration in 2013, President Kang set a goal for KAIST to become a global top 10 university and established Quantum Jump Strategies for qualitative growth through innovative education and research programs. Such initiatives have laid the foundation for KAIST to emerge as one of the world’s best “student-centered, faculty-driven, and innovative research universities.” In 2016, Thomson Reuters named KAIST the world’s sixth most innovative university. President Kang promoted a campus culture that cherishes creativity and a challenging spirit and encouraged university members to increase their interest in entrepreneurship and social responsibility. He reorganized academic structures to offer interdisciplinary education and revamped administrative organizations to streamline university management. On a softer note, he created various channels of communication within the university community to make the campus “happier and united,” which included the establishment of the Customer Satisfaction Center, the Center for Ethics and Human Rights, and coffee meetups. He promised that KAIST would remain committed to leading the frontier of higher education and research, nationally and globally. The university will establish the Graduate School for Interdisciplinary Medical Science, continue to provide university members with opportunities to learn entrepreneurship, extend its efforts to upgrade campus infrastructures, and strive to globalize and diversify the campus. Finally, President Kang praised the tremendous support KAIST has received from across Korea and the globe, including the members of KAIST and its alumni, noting that there were more than 26,000 donations made to the university during his presidency. The full text of President Kang’s New Year message follows below: President Kang's New Year Message Dear Members of KAIST, It is 2017, and the year of the rooster has dawned on us. May you and your family enjoy good health and happiness in the new year, and I hope that you will all fulfill your dreams. In return for the love and trust of the nation’s citizens, KAIST will continue to do its best. Following my inauguration in 2013, I established Quantum Jump Strategies in the first half of my term (2013 to 2014), and I also created a united KAIST during this period. In the second half (2015 to 2016), I promoted innovation through qualitative growth. KAIST has seen astonishing growth in the past four years, and this has laid the foundation to emerge as one of the world’s best Student-Centered, Faculty-Driven, and Innovative Research Universities. Creativity and challenge are the key words serving as the driving force behind national progress. KAIST’s qualitative growth has been achieved through continuous innovation of education and research, promotion of an entrepreneurial spirit, and exercising of social responsibility. KAIST’s education is constantly improving. It has developed a future-oriented educational platform, commensurate with its reputation as a world-class university, after several rounds of reorganization. The interdisciplinary education system at KAIST, based on a harmony of academic excellence and creativity, facilitates efficient operation of its broad undergraduate education and interdisciplinary graduate curriculum. Through a π-shaped education system, the students solidify their foundation at the undergraduate level, and go on to graduate school to gain more wisdom and knowledge through interdisciplinary education and research. Upon graduation, they are recognized as irreplaceable, talented members of society. The newly introduced capstone design curriculum has shifted the paradigm of Korea’s engineering education, placing greater emphasis on real-world applications. With the opportunity to plan realistic projects and identify problems, the students will acquire creativity, practical skills, teamwork, and leadership. Under Education 3.0, KAIST has implemented a student-centered education system. Students participate in self-directed learning using online contents provided before lectures, and gain knowledge and problem-solving skills through collaborative learning with team members during classes. In addition, KAIST is fulfilling its social responsibility by making its lectures available to the public through KAIST’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). KAIST is among the world’s top universities in terms of research capacity. The university has been highly ranked by QS and THE for its innovative education and research, and it was recently named by Thomson Reuters as the world’s sixth most innovative university. To ensure continuous developments, KAIST must perform sustainable research for the long run. Ideas aimed at improving humanity must be continuously produced, and the university must acquire the necessary resources to support such research. KAIST should promote a research culture that assesses researchers based on their diligence and conscientiousness rather than how successful they are. The KAIST Grand Challenge 30 Project was launched for KAIST to resolve major issues faced by humanity and to spread its culture of innovation to all. To acquire global competitiveness in the field of biological sciences, KAIST is planning to establish the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Medical Science in Sejong. From 2018, the government will allocate a budget for the graduate school, which fared well in the preliminary feasibility study. Beginning with the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Medical Science, KAIST will establish a system for innovative education and research in Sejong, and further strengthen its capacities. KAIST has worked hard to instill an entrepreneurial spirit in its students. It has provided students with many opportunities to learn entrepreneurship, so as to enhance the economic and social value of its activities in education and research. Through the Institute for Startup KAIST (ISK), the university supports students in all stages of entrepreneurship, from ideation to commercialization. The Master of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the K-School is jointly operated by several departments. Thanks to its active efforts in promoting entrepreneurship such as the opening of ISK Pangyo and the offering of the Social Entrepreneurship MBA (SEMBA), KAIST has produced the highest number of student entrepreneurs in Korea. KAIST’s innovative pursuits in its administration have been highly regarded by organizations around the world. The tenure system, introduced for the first time in Korea, has now stabilized. Its English-only lecture policy and tuition subsidy by GPA have been improved based on feedback from students and experts. KAIST went through a major administrative reorganization in 2013. The reorganization, introduced to integrate similar functions and simplify the decision-making process, enabled KAIST’s administration to adapt flexibly to changes, become function-oriented, assume roles more rationally, and to be more responsive to the needs of customers. With the opening of the Administration Development Education Center, KAIST has improved the quality of administrative services by providing staff in administrative positions with more opportunities for self-development and to attend lectures that improve the efficiency of administrative operations. The university is actively reflecting the opinions of its members through various channels of communication. The school marked a first in Korea when it implemented an ombudsman to mediate between parties in case of conflict. The Customer Satisfaction Center was opened to improve the quality of services on campus, and the Center for Ethics and Human Rights to prevent the infringement of human rights. I have tried to make myself more available to all members of KAIST, so as to freely interact with them without having to arrange separate meetings. The opening of the office of the president, coffee meetups, forums with undergraduate and graduate students, and e-mail exchanges have been tremendously helpful in gaining valuable feedback and improving university operations. KAIST is strongly supported by the citizens of Daejeon. The university has strengthened its ties with Daejeon Metropolitan City, Yuseong District Office, and Chungnam National University. Its efforts have paid off with the opening of a new path connecting Chungnam National University and KAIST, and the KAIST Bridge in front of the main gate. KAIST has encouraged students to reach out to society by serving as tutors for the socially neglected and helping out in making kimchi. By improving its infrastructure in the past four years, KAIST has now established high-quality infrastructure to support its education and research. The Chung Moon Soul Building 2 is now complete, the Academic Cultural Creative Building is underway, and the Main Library is being upgraded. New constructions or remodeling on campus include the opening of Startup KAIST Studio 2, opening of the Biomedical Research Center (Pharmacy), remodeling of International Village C, remodeling of the Semiconductor Building, remodeling of the Auditorium, remodeling of the Mechanical Engineering Building, remodeling of the Startup Village, remodeling of Haejeong Hall and Buildings No. 8 and 9, remodeling of the Outdoor Theater, remodeling of Hwaam Dormitory (tentative), establishment of an eco campus (planting of pine trees), establishment of a safe campus (improvements to roads and pedestrian roads). Besides expanding its infrastructure, KAIST has exerted efforts to make efficient use of existing space by relocating IBS and the Graduate School for Green Growth to Munji Campus. KAIST strives to create a more accommodating atmosphere for international members and to embrace diversity. It has reached its goal of having international faculty, international students, and female faculty account for 10% each of the total school population. Now, it is time to improve this 10:10:10 initiative to a 20:20:20 initiative. In addition, it must continue to improve the common kitchen at Nanum Hall, communicate with international members through regular podcasts, open a Halal Food Cafeteria, establish a bilingual campus, offer joint degrees with outstanding universities, expand overseas internship opportunities, enhance gender equality, and improve the women’s lounge and childcare facilities. In the near future, I believe that KAIST will be a center of attention both at home and abroad. It has attracted an increasing number of undergraduate applicants in the past four years, and admits highly qualified freshmen each year. Students of all levels, including freshmen, have shown great pride in studying at KAIST. Recently, the university has received a high number of donations from students, alumni, and parents. There were more than 26,000 donations in the past four years, amounting to a total of 70.8 billion won. KAIST is also serving as a benchmark institute for similar organizations in and outside of Korea. Some authorities have even requested KAIST to open branch campuses in their countries. These results would not have been possible without your efforts to create a happy campus. Dear Members of KAIST, This New Year’s greetings will be my last as the president of KAIST. The Board of Trustees is selecting a new president, whose inauguration shall fall on February 23, 2017. I will look back fondly on my past four years at KAIST. During the remainder of my term as the president, I will concentrate my efforts to create a happy campus for each and every member. It was a great pleasure and honor to serve as President for the past four years. I am sincerely grateful to all members for playing their part in nurturing KAIST into the world’s best university and in creating a happy campus. You are the future of KAIST, and the driving force behind Korea. I believe you have what it takes to lead developments in the country, and I encourage you to dream bigger. May 2017 be a year in which all members of KAIST fulfill their dreams. Let us work towards our goal of becoming the hub of the fourth industrial revolution and one of the world’s best Student-Centered, Faculty-Driven Research Universities.

Mobile Software Platform Research Center Recognized by the MSIP
The Mobile Software Platform Research Center (MSPRC) at KAIST received an award from the Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning of Korea on November 29, 2016, at Coex in Seoul. The award was presented at the Conference of Software R&D Annual Report 2016 hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MISP) and the Institute for Information and Communications Technology Promotion (IITP). The research center developed user experience (UX)-oriented mobile software platforms that support the invention of next-generation UX service technologies. The center has filed 37 patents and registered 15 technologies. Its researchers received ten Best Paper Awards and published a total of 133 papers in Korean and international journals. Research teams at MSPRC expect that their software platforms will offer training programs for software engineers and new UX services. They also said that their extensive event processing platforms would reduce energy consumption on mobile devices. Professor Seungryoul Maeng of the School of Computing, the Director of MSPRC, said, “This is a great honor for us. I am greatly thankful for the teamwork of participating departments--Computer Science, Industrial Design, and Industrial and Systems Engineering. MOU between KAIST and DTU Signed
KAIST and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate in the areas of startup, student exchange, and joint research on October 25, 2016 at the Embassy of Denmark in Seoul, Korea. Under the agreement, KAIST and DTU will exchange students and researchers through startup programs and continue to collaborating in education and research. The MOU was facilitated during the Green Growth Alliance Meeting and Energy Seminar hosted by the Danish embassy, in which Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen participated. President Steve Kang of KAIST, who fostered the agreement, said, “DTU has been one of our strategic partners in Europe. We have been working closely with them on academic exchanges and research collaborations, but now with the expansion of our cooperation into entrepreneurship, we will create momentum to spur startups in both schools. To support such activities, we will use KAIST’s experiences acquired from operating the K-School, an entrepreneurship graduate school, and the Institute of KAIST Entrepreneurship. DTU will also share their knowledge on startup programs including SkyLab and StartDTU. I believe this will become another successful alliance between the two universities.” As of October 2016, KAIST has made 18 agreements with DTU, exchanging 120 students in the past three years and implementing various joint seminars and conferences for academic and research exchanges. Established in 1829, DTU has been a leading science and technology university in Denmark. It ranked 109 in the QS World University Rankings 2016 and 46th in its subject rankings in engineering and technology. KAIST and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics Agree to Cooperate in Education and Research
KAIST and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary extended their existing agreement for comprehensive cooperation in education and research, and signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) for student exchanges on October 19, 2016, at Budapest University. The two universities will exchange faculty, researchers, and students for education and research collaboration, implement dual degree programs, conduct joint lectures and research projects, and share infrastructures and talent pools. These agreements were part of the agenda for the 8th Meeting of the Korea and Hungary Science and Technology Joint Committee, which took place October 17-19, 2016, in Budapest. President Sung-Mo Kang of KAIST, Associate Vice President Sung-Hyon Myaeng of the International Office, and Director General Won-Ho Choi of International Relations at the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning of Korea were present at the MOU singing. Associate Vice President Myaeng said: “Traditionally, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics has been known for its strong base in the natural sciences. Combining this with KAIST’s excellence in engineering, the two universities will bring synergistic effects that will help further develop the schools as well as their host nations.” “Finding partners to implement joint research projects sponsored by the European Union or establishing cooperative networks among future talents between the two countries through various student exchange programs can be a good starting point,” he added. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics was created in 1782, and is one of the most prestigious universities in Hungary, having produced three Nobel Prize laureates. It has a highly-globalized campus, where one third of its student population is made up of international students, and offers lectures and research in English. In addition, the Hungarian-Korean Technical Cooperation Center Foundation, established in 1992 and based in Budapest, hosted a seminar on science in Korea and Hungary on October 17, 2016. KAIST Signs an Agreement with CSC for Cooperation
KAIST and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) established a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to support the admission of Chinese students to KAIST on October 5, 2016 in Seoul. KAIST is the only institution in Korea made such agreement with the CSC. Affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China, the CSC is a non-profit institution that provides financial assistance to Chinese students to study abroad and to internationals wishing to study in China. The CSC has supported 500,000 Chinese students for their studying and living in a foreign country, and this year alone, it provided outbound Chinese students with scholarships of approximately USD 100 million. Under the MOU, Chinese students admitted to KAIST’s master’s and doctoral programs will receive finical support from CSC, including monthly stipends and roundtrip airfare from China to Korea. President Sung-Mo Kang of KAIST said, “This is a great opportunity for us because we can invite more outstanding Chinese students. They will make our campus more diverse and global, while their academic experiences will become richer with KAIST’s offerings in education and research. KAIST Hosts the 2016 IPFGRU
More than 120 senior representatives from 65 universities around the world will convene this month in Seoul to discuss the social responsibilities of higher education and strategic global partnerships among academia, research, and industry to advance socio-economic values. Higher education as a driver of change to address the social and global challenges facing humanity in the 21st century has never been as important as it is today. KAIST will raise the topic of higher education as a driver of social change, innovation, and entrepreneurship with the heads of global universities at its seventh international forum to be held on April 11-12, 2016 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul, the Republic of Korea. The 2016 International Presidential Forum on Global Research Universities (IPFGRU) will bring over 120 presidents and vice presidents of 65 research universities and institutes from 36 nations together to discuss the theme of “Social Responsibilities of Higher Education and Strategic Global Partnership.” Presidents Sung-Mo Kang of KAIST, Jacques Biot of École Polytechnique in France, and Peretz Lavie of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology will address the conference as plenary speakers. President Kang will speak about KAIST’s initiatives to produce creative talents through student-centered education, entrepreneurship curricula, and the integration of humanities into cutting-edge research programs. His presentation, titled “The Fostering of Creative Talents and the Social Responsibility of Research Universities in the New Era,” introduces KAIST’s educational philosophy which can be represented as π. A broad range of understanding in basic disciplines (the horizontal line) is supported with one prong of in-depth knowledge in a chosen field and the other in entrepreneurial spirit. KAIST graduates have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in research, academia, business, and public service. Nearly 25% of the research and development personnel at Samsung Electronics are KAIST Ph.D. holders. President Kang also describes KAIST’s latest endeavor to turn a university-led entrepreneurial activity into a stable business based on research outcomes and campus innovations. The K-School, a one-year master’s degree program on entrepreneurship and innovation, has just launched and is expecting to receive its first batch of students this fall. The K-School is envisioned to continue the university’s legacy as a major feeder for startups in Korea. President Lavie will give a talk on “Fostering an Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) Ecosystem in Israel,” in which he describes how the Technion-Israel Institute has become integral to the foundation of the nation’s I&E platform. Since its establishment in 1912, the university has become a key player in the growth of Israel’s industry, science, and technology while nurturing the majority of the nation’s top-notch researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Technion graduates have created more than 2,000 companies in Israel alone, generating 100,000 jobs and USD 30 billion through mergers and acquisitions. President Biot will offer his insights into how the future of global research universities will be widely impacted by the emergence of disruptions triggered by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In his speech entitled “How to Prepare Our Universities for the New Era of Industry 4.0,” he emphasizes that universities should take multi-disciplinary approaches to tackle societal challenges given the complexity of today’s problems ranging from climate change to energy crises, pandemic diseases, and poverty. He argues that universities should identify the needs of students in “Generation Z” who, from birth, have been heavily exposed to the Internet and digital technologies and, thus, universities should develop new educational systems (i.e., University 4.0.) to better prepare these students to cope with Industry 4.0. The IPFGRU consists of presentations and discussions addressing the following sub-topics: - Seeking a New Model of Research Universities in a New Era: This session will explore the role of research universities as both innovation drivers and growth engines in an age of robotics, globalization, and digitally-driven markets. In addition, speakers will discuss how to prepare universities for the Industry 4.0 era, and how multidisciplinary approaches and open innovations will play a large part in facilitating translational research and technology transfer. - Shared Challenges and Responsibilities from a Global Perspective: Universities will share their strategies, policies, and practices to respond to critical issues facing local and global communities such as youth unemployment, the environment, energy, inequality, and entrepreneurship. - Strategic Global Partnerships for Sustainable Development: Panelists will discuss how to build productive and sustainable partnerships that can generate synergies between education and research. - Insights into Higher Education: Trends and Development: Participants will examine how universities can stay relevant in an increasingly competitive higher education sector and can assist students to better adapt to opportunities and challenges posed by the new industry of digital transformation and exponentially-growing technologies. Sung-Hyon Myaeng, the Associate Vice President of the International Office at KAIST and a Co-chair of the 2016 IPFGRU said, “The IPFGRU was established in 2008 to promote excellence and innovation in higher education with presidents of leading research universities and key policy-makers in the private and public sectors from across the world. Since then, it has served as one of the largest university gatherings in Asia, allowing participants to cooperate and share their expertise, ideas, and best practices taking place in academia, industry, and government.” “This year’s meeting has recorded the largest number of universities participating, including 28 European schools, 20 Asian institutions, and 8 schools from the Americas, which I believe reflects a sense of urgency that global universities share. KAIST Confers Two Honorary Doctorates at Its 2016 Commencement
KAIST awarded two honorary doctoral degrees at this year’s commencement which took place on February 19, 2016. Chang-Hee Kang (pictured on the left below), a former Speaker of the National Assembly of Korea and a serving member of the current Assembly, as well as Patrick Aebischer (pictured on the right), the President of the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, received honorary doctorates in science and technology. National Assemblyman Kang was born in 1946 and grew up in Daejeon. He graduated from the Korea Military Academy in 1969, and received a master’s degree in management from Kyungnam University, Korea, in 1980. He began his distinguished political career with his first election to the 11th National Assembly in 1983. Since then, he has been reelected to the Assembly five times, becoming a leading politician representing Daejeon and Chungchong Province for the past 35 years. Throughout his career in public service, he served in various important offices, such as Chief Secretary for the Prime Minster of Korea, Chairman of the Telecommunications, Science and Technology Committee for the National Assembly, and the first Minister of Science and Technology of Korea. Assemblyman Kang has always been a strong advocate for the important role that science and technology continue to play in the growth of Korea. He has worked on many of the critical issues relating to science and research in the nation, including the establishment of the Ministry of Science and Technology in the Korean government, the legislation of special law for science and technology innovation, and the adoption of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) for the national standard of personal communication services. In his acceptance speech for the degree, Assemblyman Kang said, “As a member of the science and technology community, and as a part of KAIST, I will strive harder to further advance the science and technology field of Korea.” President Patrick Aebischer was born in 1954 in Fribourg, Switzerland. He was raised in a family of artists, from which his ingenuity, a character he has often displayed as a researcher, was nurtured. He received a doctorate in medicine from the University of Geneva in 1980, and three years later, obtained a doctorate in neuroscience from the University of Fribourg. He started his teaching and research career at Brown University in the United States in 1984, where he was eventually promoted to Associate Professor in medical sciences. After living nearly a decade in the United States, President Aebischer returned to Switzerland and became a professor at the Lausanne University Medical School, while serving at the same time as the Director of its Surgical Research Division and Gene Therapy Center. President Aebischer was appointed by the Swiss Federal Council to lead EPFL in 1999, one of the two most prestigious science and technology universities in the nation. From March 2000, he has served as the President of EPFL. Under his leadership, EPFL has flourished and expanded its reach across the globe. The university’s core expertise, engineering, has successfully evolved. In addition to engineering, it now offers some of the best programs in natural and life sciences, finance, and management in the world. His endeavors to promote “disruptive innovations” for the advancement of his own institution, as well as for the whole community of science and research, have led him to introduce many reforms and changes “to push the envelope” on behalf of higher education in science and technology. In his acceptance speech, President Aebischer said, “I strongly believe that the future belongs to forward-looking and entrepreneurial universities, such as KAIST—to be able to offer a unique education aimed at finding solutions to the global issues such as climate change, dwindling natural resources, aging, cyber-security, and migration amongst others.”

Asia Pacific Biotech News' Special Coverage of Korean Biotechnology
The Asia Pacific Biotech News covered five major biotechnology research projects sponsored by the Korean government in the areas of biofuels, biomedicine, bio-nano healthcare, and biorefinery. The Asia Pacific Biotech News (APBN), a monthly magazine based in Singapore, which offers comprehensive reports on the fields of pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and biotechnology, recently published a special feature on Korea’s biotechnology research and development (R&D) programs. The magazine feature selected five research programs sponsored by the Korean government, which are either part of the Global Frontier or the Climate Change Technology Development Projects. The programs are: Systems Metabolic Engineering Research: Distinguished Professor Sang Yup Lee of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has been leading a research group to develop biorefining technology using renewable non-food biomass to produce chemicals, fuels, and materials that were largely drawn from fossil resources through petrochemical refinery processes. Applying a systems metabolic engineering approach, the group succeeded in modifying the metabolic pathways of microorganisms. As a result, they produced, for the first time in the world, engineered plastic raw materials and gasoline. The team also developed a technique to produce butanol and succinic acid with a higher titer and yield using metabolically engineered microorganisms. Next-generation Biomass Research: Under the leadership of Professor Yong- Keun Chang of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at KAIST, the research project, which belongs to the Global Frontier Project, develops biofuels and bioproducts utilizing microalgae typically found in water and other marine systems. Convergence Research for Biomedicine: Professor Sung-Hoon Kim of Seoul National University leads this project that develops targeted new drugs based on convergence research strategies. Bionano Healthcare Chip Research: Director Bong-Hyun Chung of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology has integrated information and communications technology, nanotechnology, and biotechnology to develop a diagnostic kit that can screen toxic germs, virus, and toxic materials in a prompt and accurate manner. Biosynergy Research: Led by Professor Do-Hun Lee of the Bio and Brain Engineering Department at KAIST, this research project develops new treatments with a multi-target, multi-component approach in the context of systems biology through an analysis of synergistic reactions between multi-compounds in traditional East Asian medicine and human metabolites. In East Asian medicine, treatment and caring of the human body are considered analogous to the politics of governing a nation. Based on such system, the research focuses on designing a foundation for the integration of traditional medicine with modern drug discovery and development. Director Ilsub Baek at the Platform Technology Division of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Republic of Korea, who is responsible for the Global Frontier Program and the Technology to Solve Climate Change, said, “It is great to see that Asia Pacific Biotech News published an extensive coverage of Korea’s several key research programs on biotechnology as its first issue of this year. KAIST Wins the Korea Donation for Education Awards 2015
KAIST received the grand prize for the university section at the Korea Donation for Education Awards 2015. The award ceremony took place at Seoul Plaza Hotel on December 15, 2015. The Ministry of Education created the award in 2012 to raise awareness about the need for charitable donations for education and to encourage the public’s participation in such endeavors. Recipients have included private companies, public institutions, non-profit organizations, universities, and individuals who have made notable contributions to education, for example, by offering educational programs or fundraising for such programs throughout a year. Many organizations within KAIST, including the KAIST Center of Donation for Education, the Midam Scholarship Committee, the Donation for Software Education Group, the Chalk Academy, KAIST Student Volunteers, and K-LET, have been collectively recognized for their efforts to develop educational materials and managing academic camps and programs. In addition to the grand prize which KAIST won, the Ministry of Education gave Neung-In Jang, a student pursuing a social entrepreneurship MBA at KAIST, an award for his efforts to provide quality education to teenagers by establishing the Midam Scholarship Committee in 2009. The Scholarship aims to revitalize the culture of donation for education by offering free math and science classes to high school students who are less privileged and by inspiring other universities in Korea to follow suit the committee’s volunteering activities.

KAIST's Freshmen End the 2015 Fall Semester by Donating to Their School
Each of KAIST's 271 freshmen donated USD 8.50 to the school, totaling USD 2,300, as part of a campaign to support their alma mater. The donation was presented to President Steve Kang on December 10, 2015. The students made the donation to express their thanks for what they have received from the school during their first year in KAIST. Hae-In Suh, a freshman who participated in the donation campaign, said, “I’ve enjoyed many programs and events offered by the university in my first year, in which I learned a great deal about the university life and found many friends. I’m really happy to finish my first year with this meaningful contribution, albeit a small amount, to the school.” In the picture, KAIST freshmen hold their Certificate of Donation.

KAIST and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Partner for Research and Education Collaboration
President Steve Kang of KAIST and President Eric W. Kaler of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (United States) signed a memorandum of understanding to create exchange programs for students and faculty and to conduct joint research in the field of health and food. The following is an excerpt from President Kaler’s blog (https://storify.com/UMNstory/globalumn-hksk#edaadf) on his visit of KAIST on November 18, 2015: A visit to the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology About 90 miles from Seoul—and more than that two-and-a-half-hours of a bus ride through the rugged early-morning traffic of South Korea’s capital city—sits Daejeon, Korea’s sixth largest city and home to KAIST, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Today, President Kaler and the small University of Minnesota delegation accompanying him visited what’s considered Korea’s MIT, a place focused on research and known to push the limits toward the future. Fingernail heart monitors? Wireless anesthetic-monitoring devices? KAIST is working on them. The overlap of interests—from biomedical engineering to nanotechnology to robotics—between KAIST (pronounced “Kyst”) and the U are remarkable. Smartphone apps to monitor human health and GPS-driven robots to serve military interests or deliver packages were among the developing inventions that KAIST scientists showed to Kaler. And even the personal relationships seem to illustrate the cliché of a small world and the natural affinity of Minnesota and KAIST. KAIST’s President Sang Mo Kang was once the head of the University of Illinois’ department of electrical and computer engineering, and he and Kaler—a renowned chemical engineer before becoming the U’s president—hit it off … despite disagreeing about the potential outcome of Saturday’s Illinois-Gophers football game. Accompanying Kaler on the day’s journey, meetings, and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two schools to advance collaborations was U Associate Professor Sang Hyun Oh. Oh happens to be a physics graduate of this very KAIST and is now a rising star in Minnesota’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The two sides agreed to focus on matching scholars on their respective campuses to discuss the sorts of research the two institutions can partner on. The idea of “Grand Challenges,” at the core of the U’s Twin Cities campus Strategic Plan, has fascinated Korean higher education leaders during Kaler’s weeklong visit, and KAIST’s leadership was interested in the health and food research, two U strengths. ###

KAIST and Charles University Agree to Cooperate
KAIST and Charles University in Prague, the Czech Republic, agreed to cooperate in research and education. President Steve Kang of KAIST (pictured on the left) and Rector Tomáš Zima of Charles University signed the agreement on December 2, 2015, at the Hilton Hotel in Prague. Minster Yang-Hee Choi of Science, ICT and Future Planning of the Republic of Korea and Minister Kateřina Valachová of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic also joined the signing ceremony. Under the agreement, the two institutions will exchange students and researchers, as well as implement joint research programs. President Kang said, “We are pleased to work with one of the most prestigious universities in the Czech Republic and hope to build a good partnership in the years ahead.” Founded in 1348, Charles University in Prague is the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic. The university received two Nobel prizes in physiology or medicine and in chemistry in 1947 and 1959, respectively.
