Professor Yang Named Recipient of Dupont Science & Technology Award
Professor Yang Named Recipient of Dupont Science & Technology Award - Named as the recipient of Dupont Science & Technology Award of 2007- In recognition of his development of optical?bio-functional photonic crystal structures through Self-assembly of nanoparticles Seung-Man Yang, a professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering of KAIST (President Nam Pyo Suh) and the president of the National Creative Research Initiatives Center for Photon and Fluid Integrated Circuit by the Ministry of Science and Technology, has been named as the recipient of Dupont Science & Technology Award. Dupont Korea, associate of Dupont, a world-class science firm, has established and conferred ‘Dupont Science & Technology Award’ since 2002 to promote basic sciences and industrial development of Korea. Dupont Science & Technology Awards are awarded to scientists of universities or state-run institutes who have made outstanding R&D achievements in the fields of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science and Material Engineering within five years. Dupont Korea announced on May 2, 2007 that Professor Yang is the recipient of the award this year, following the strict examination by the Koran Academy of Science and Technology (KAST). The reason for the award is Professor Yang’s development of prototype optical?bio-functional photonic crystal structures that can process a huge amount of data, resulting from a study that has discovered the principle of Self-assembly where multifunctional nanoparticles are manufactured and assembled for themselves. Professor Yang’s recent research result about photon structures and nano patterns was published by Nature (February 2, 2006 edition); posted on Heart-Cut, the portal site of the American Chemistry Society (ACS), as highlight paper two times (November 4, 2002 and May 1, 2006); and introduced at Research/Researcher of MRS Bulletin by the U.S. Material Research Society (MRS) as main paper in December 2003. Professor Yang is very famous in Korea and abroad for the excellences of his research achievements and has made request seminars at Harvard University, University of Wisconsin, Caltech, University of California, etc. He is also invited speaker and session organizer of the MRS and the SPIE.

KAIST To Hold Robot Competition
KAIST To Hold Robot Competition KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) will be holding ‘the 6th Intelligent SoC Robotwar 2007’ and is now receiving online applications at the official web site of the competition, www.socrobotwar.org. Application deadline is May 31, Thursday. ‘Intelligent SoC Robotwar’ is a competition of intelligent robots employing System on Chip (SoC) that commenced in 2002. In the competition, participants will embody their ideas in the same intelligent robot platforms and robot bodies, and how well the ideas are embodied will decide winners. In the part of tank robot competition (left photo), tank-like robots attack enemy robots by using laser, which demands technologies of scene analysis, radio communication and speech recognition. Hence, a variety of recognition algorithms and motion algorithms significantly affect match results. Taekwon robot competition is a fight competition of two-leg robots. In the competition, robots equipped with scene analysis technologies perceive the location, distance and motion of enemy robots and do motions of attack and defense with no control by operators. Teams must be made up of two or more persons including undergraduate or graduate students and all teams are entitled to participate in theoretical and practical education on platform boards for robots and intelligent robots. Final winner will be decided through qualifying test, preliminary matches and main matches. “The most distinct characteristic of this competition is robot’s intelligence takes top priority. It’s not remote control-operated robots but autonomously operating intelligent robots that will make Korean robot-related industries further profitable. Considering that last year, total 138 teams participated in the competition and an award from the Prime Minister was given to the winner, the competition undoubtedly hold the top position among robot-related competitions,” said Hee-Joon You, President of the competition committee and a professor of Electrical Engineering. Professor Sang-Yup Lee Named Senior Editor of U.S. Biotechnology Journal Will supervise paper examination in the fields of system biology, system bioengineering and metabolic engineering, and set editing direction Professor Sang-Yup Lee, LG Chemical’s Chair-Professor and the leader of BK project group of KAIST Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department, was named senior editor of Biotechnology Journal published by the U.S. Wiley-VCH. Professor Lee will supervise paper examination in the fields of system biology, system bioengineering and metabolic engineering, and set and manage the editing direction of the journal. ‘Biotechnology Journal’ was first published in January 2006 to exchange rapidly-exchanging knowledge and information in life science and its relevant fields by Wiley, a world-famous science journal publisher with the history of 208 years (founded in 1799). Particularly, ‘Biotechnology Journal’ is a new-typed scientific journal treating various fields such as life science research-relevant ethics and cultures necessary for general people as well as expertise research information of life science. “Although taking charge of editing of many scientific journals spends much time, it’s very fruitful that I’ll lead the direction of research papers of many world-famous scientific journals and I can make efforts to prevent outstanding papers by Korean scientists from being disadvantaged,” said Professor Lee. “More Korean scholars are taking charge of editing jobs of world-famous scientific journals. SK Telecom Vice Chairman Jung-Nam Cho appointed as Chairman of KAIST BOT
SK Telecom Vice Chairman Jung-Nam Cho appointed as Chairman of KAIST BOT KAIST Board of Trustees (BOT) appointed Jung-Nam Cho, Vice chairman of SK Telecom, as the chairman of KAIST BOT at its 178th special session, Tuesday, January 23, 2007. Chairman Cho graduated from Seoul National University (SNU) and studied business administration at University of California in Berkeley and Chief Executive Officer’s courses at the College of Business Administration of SNU. He served as managing director of technical part, etc. at Yugong, the predecessor of SK Corporation (1970 ? 1995) and the president of service and production division and the chairman of the central research institute at SK Telecom Co., Ltd. (1995-1997). He is the former vice chairman of the National Academy Engineering of Korea and, now, the chairman of Korean Radio Promotion Association and the chairman of Korea Amateur Fencing Association. He received an award for excellence in information and communication and Dongtap Industry Medal of the Ministry of Information and Communication for his contribution to world-first commercialization of CDMA in 2001. He also won a medal for his contribution to the development from Vietnam government in 2003. His chairmanship term is from January 23, 2007 thru April 13, 2007.

Singer Janghoon Kim Donates Development Fund to KAIST - Generously donates part of earnings from his concert where HUBO performed for development of science - Opportunity for activation of science culture through encounter between science and culture Singer Janghoon Kim donated 50 million won from his concert earnings for KAIST development fund. Singer Kim visited KAIST on January 16 (Tue) and donated the development fund at the joint lecture room in KAIST Mechanical Engineering B/D. Singer Kim had a concert at the end of the last year where he performed with ‘HUBO’ and ‘Albert HUBO’, human-like robots of KAIST HUBO center. Singer Kim made a donation to express his gratitude to KAIST Professor Joonho Oh and his research team, who assisted his concert actively to allow HUBO to join the concert in spite of technical difficulties and research obstacles. “Although HUBO has performed various activities so far, it is the first time to make a successful performance with a singer on a stage. Honestly, I hesitated a lot to allow HUBO to join Kim’s concert due to safety problems etc., but I was so impressed by Kim’s interest and passion for science, and thus decided HUBO’s joining the concert. This is the first case how robots can exchange with public cultures. I wish this case will be a momentum to activate science culture and make people feel closer to science,” Professor Oh said. The donation will be spent partly as KAIST development fund (20 million won) and partly on the publicity of science and technology via HUBO (30 million won).

KAIST Alumni Awards of the Year were conferred on ▲ Byung-Kyu Chang, CEO of Cheot-noon Inc., at the young alumni section, ▲ Jin-Gon Kim, Professor of POSTECH, at the academy section, ▲ Sin-Bae Kim, CEO of SK Telecom, at the industry section, and ▲ Sang-Ki Rhee, President of Korea Research Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology (KRIBB), at the society section. The young alumni section winner Byung-Kyu Chang, Master of KAIST Computer Sciences (Class ‘97), has jointly created Neowiz, Korea’s typical internet venture company, and created Cheot-noon Inc., internet-searching company, to substantially contribute to the development of Korea’s IT industries. The academy section winner Jin-Gon Kim, Master of KAIST Chemical Engineering (Class ‘82), has made great research achievements in nano field, such as the development of high molecular tube theory, etc. The industry section winner Sin-Bae Kim, Master of KAIST Industrial Engineering (Class ‘80), has contributed to the development of mobile communication and information system industries with his outstanding technology management capabilities and shown excellent models to junior engineers with his creative managing philosophies. The society section winner Sang-Ki Rhee, Ph.D of KAIST Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (Class ‘80), has contributed to the development of practicalization technologies in genetic engineering field and the government’s establishment of biotechnology policies, and created large-scaled research performances through management renovation during his reign as the president of KRIBB. ‘KAIST Alumni Award of the Year’, the greatest honor of KAIST alumni, was established in 1992 to encourage alumni’s activities by yearly awarding alumni who contribute to the development of the nation and the society and raise the fame of alma mater.

Professor Jongwon Lee wins Korean Engineering Award
Professor Jongwon Lee wins Korean Engineering Award Professor Jongwon Lee of the department of Mechanical Engineering won the 7th Korean Engineering Award conferred by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Korean Science and Engineering Foundation. Professor Lee is a world-famous scholar in the field of ‘dynamics and vibration of rotors’ and his work in 1993, ‘Vibration Analysis of Rotors’, is highly recognized as a creative and practical research on the dynamics of rotors. The Korean Engineering Award is conferred on domestic scientists who have made world-level research achievements in the engineering field by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Korean Science and Technology Foundation every two years.

Yoonsun Doh Wins ‘Outstanding Poster Paper Award’ at IDW Yoonsun Doh, a master-course student at the Division of Electrical Engineering (Advisory professor Kyungchul Choi) won the Outstanding Poster Paper Award at IDW 2006, which was held at Otsu, Japan on December 8, 2006. The title of Doh’s paper is ‘Relationship between IR Emission of Reset Discharge and Image Retention in AC PDP’. At the paper, Doh proposed a method capable of quantitatively measuring the temporary image-sticking phenomena, which is raised as a problem that impairs the quality of images on an AC PDP.

Jinkon Chung won gold prize at 'Intel student paper contest'
Jinkon Chung won gold prize at ‘Intel student paper contest’ Jinkon Chung, doctorate student at the Division of Electrical Engineering under Professor Yonghoon Lee’s supervisory, won the gold prize at ‘the student paper contest 2006’ organized by Intel Korea. Chung proposed an important key for the next-generation mobile communication technologies at his paper entitled with ‘Regularized channel diagonalization for multi-user MIMO downlink using a modified MMSE criterion’. That is a new linear processing algorithm showing superior performances to the existing ZF-based or MMSC-based methods under the circumference of multi-user MIMO, which is the most spotlighted field in the recent next-generation mobile communication technologies, which was highly evaluated in the contest. Meanwhile, Howon Lee and Sunghoon Lim, Division of Electrical Engineering, also won bronze prizes.

KAIST Chong-Moon Lee Library Opens Jong-Moon Lee Library, management education library for scientists possessing the biggest amount of entrepreneurship data in Asia, opens in KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) on Thursday, November 9, 2006. Jong-Moon Lee Library was planned when Jong-Moon Lee, Chairman of AmBex, donated 2 million dollar to KAIST and founded Entrepreneurship Research Center at KAIST in 2004. Chairman Lee emphasized on the necessity of management education for scientists of advanced technology-based venture companies and set the management plan for Jong-Moon Lee Library securing the biggest amount of Entrepreneurship data in Asia. Jong-Moon Lee Library possesses books for inspiring entrepreneurship, including ▲ books regarding how to prepare and evaluate business plans that support the realization of business ideas such as venture company founding, etc. ▲ administrative books necessary for company management such as leadership and finance, accounting, etc. ▲ economic books that foster reader’s insight over economy and society. The number of books is about 4,900 and various journals including Harvard Business Review are also provided. KAIST Entrepreneurship Research Center (President Tae-Yong Yang) is now carrying out ▲ the management of entrepreneurship library for Engineering students and businessmen ▲ programs for entrepreneurship education and venture-company founding ▲aid for business plan forums and academic conferences. It benchmarks Stanford Technology Venture Program (STVP) of Stanford University, which is evaluated the most excellent program in researches and realization of entrepreneurship, and manages education programs for scientific manpower with international managing minds on the basis of world’s best capabilities in scientific researches and education of KAIST. President Yang explained about the management plan by saying, “Following Chairman Jong-Moon Lee’s intention, the center will educate entrepreneurship to engineering students and properly diagnose initial values of excellent technologies, thereby making venture companies flourish.”

Sungil Chung listed in Who's Who following last year
Sungil Chung listed in Who’s Who following last year Sungil Chung, senior researcher of KAIST Satellite Technology Research Center (STRC), is listed in the international biographical dictionary Marquis Who"s Who’s Who’s Who in the America Edition 2007 following last year. He is also listed in the first edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders. Ph.D. Chung majored in Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) at Texas A&M University and worked at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center for a research in the field of aerospace vehicle-related thermal control. He has worked at KAIST STRC as senior researcher from September this year. He has won an Innovation and Creativity Prize Paper Award from the U.S. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2004.
