World?'s First Automated Maritime-Docking between Naval Vessels
KAIST demonstrated the technology that allows automated maritime docking between naval vessels on the 26th of April at Busan, Korea. The docking technology is seen as one of the key components for the mobile harbor as it prevents collision between two naval vessels upon docking. It was recognized as an important technology worldwide, but its technological limitations made it hard to commercialize. The demonstrated included approaching a barge next to a cargo vessel, performing automated docking, and maintaining the docking and solutions in the advent of an emergency. The mobile harbor is, in essence, is a ‘moving port’ and the automated docking technology is imperative to commercialize the mobile harbor. In order for a large container ship to unload cargo, the mobile harbor needs to approach the container ship and dock onto the side of the ship. The technology required to keep the two moving vessels docked, out at sea, in an efficient and safe manner, is daunting. The conventional method involved sailors tying the two vessels together with rope which made it time consuming and hard to react quickly in emergency situations. The KAIST mobile harbor research team developed the docking technology with ‘Mirae Industrial Machine’ Maritime Corporation, and ‘Ocean Space’. The mobile harbor will allow two vessels to perform loading and unloading of cargo regardless of wind and current, using robotic arms, vacuum attachment pads, wench, and are a complex, integrated system. KAIST is planning on having a demonstration that encompasses all the technology required for mobile harbor: from the docking technology to the stabilizing crane technology. Advancements made by KAIST are expected to speed up the commercialization and the real life application of mobile harbor.

Graduation of class of 2011 held
The graduation ceremony for the class of 2011 was held in the Ryu Keun Chul Sports Complex on the 11th of February with the Vice minister of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Kim Chang Kyung, Oh Myoung Chairman of the board, graduates, and 2,500 parents of the graduates. 5 honorary doctors, 507 doctors, 1,111 masters’ graduates, 771 undergraduates (2,389 in total) received their degrees. KAIST has produced since being established in 1971, 8,578 doctors, 22,796 masters’ graduates, 11,341 undergraduates; a total of 42,715 highly skilled science and technology experts. During the ceremony Ms. Oh Lee Won, who helped establish the Professor Lee Won Jo Program, Chairman Cho Cheon Shik, who helped establish the graduate school of Green Traffic technology, Chairman Jang Young Shin, President Kim Young Gil of HanDong University, and Shirley Ann Jackson, President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, received honorary doctorate degrees. The valedictorian of the undergraduates was Ryu Jae Yoon (22 years old, department of Chemistry), and received the ‘Minister of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology Award’ and gave a speech on behalf of the graduating undergraduates. Mr. Ryu commented “I am very happy and honored to be graduating as a valedictorian” and that “I had attended the 2010 Nobel Prize Award Ceremony as representative of the Korea Engineering Undergraduates and I hope to become a Nobel Prize recipient myself one day and will do my utmost to become one”. Mr. Ryu will progress onto the graduate school of Chemistry and will be studying catalytic reactions in organometallic compounds. In addition the Chairman of the Board Award went to Kang Jong Ho (department of Mathematics), President Award went to Cho Hyun Jae (department of Electric and Electronic Engineering), Chairman of Alumni Award went to Lee Joo Young (department of Aerospace Engineering), School Support Award went to Kim Dong Han (department of Mechanical Engineering). Also, the Graduate college of Cultural Technology produced, for the first time ever since being established in September of 2005, 3 doctors. A Mongolian government official known as ‘Tumur’ (Tumurpureve Dulambazar) received a doctorate’s degree and his son Jagdori is currently enrolled in KAIST and will be receiving a masters’ degree this coming fall graduation. Christopher Emmerich received a double degree from KAIST and Germany’s Karlsruche Institute of Technology. The vice president of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said in his commemoratory speech, “Make sure to sacrifice and work hard for advancement of country and society with pride and belief that you are experts in your respective fields.” And that, “we expect you to compete with world’s leading experts in your respective fields thereby helping improve Korea’s status in the world”. President Seo commented, “Graduates of KAIST are ready to make great contributions to not only Korea but the human race in general. Hopefully the education the graduates received at KAIST will be used to help society and the human race.”

KAIST MBA program was ranked 99th by Financial Times Global MBA Rankings 2011.

Minister of Higher Education of Saudi Arabia Visited KAIST to Sign Agreement on Joint Research Projects
Khaled bin Mohammad Al-Anqari, the Minister of Higher Education of Saudi Arabia, visited KAIST on October 26th to conclude a joint agreement with KAIST. The group of Saudi Arabian visitors included Abdullah bin Abdularhman Al-Othman, President of the King Saud University, Osama bin Sadiq Tayeb, President of King Abdulaziz University, and Khalid bin Salih Al-Sultan, President of the best Saudi Arabian technological university, King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals. Through research agreement between KAIST and the King Saud University and King Fahad University of Petroleum and Minerals, joint research projects, mutual visitations of research professors, interchange of academic programs, joint seminars and scientific societies will be held to promote the lively interchange between higher education institutions of Korea and Saudi Arabia. In particular, King Saud University and KAIST has signed an agreement on joint research projects in the fields of “Solar-Ocean Thermal Exchange Desalination,” “Develop New Energy Management Service for Residential and Commercial Customers Using Smart Metering and Sensor Network Information” and “Superior Production of Lactic Acid from Saudi Dates Using Bioprocess Technology.” The projects will be funded by the Saudi Arabian government, and their scope will be determined in the future “Compared to the robust industrial economic interactions between the Middle East and Korea, the interchange of the two countries’ higher education institutions has been poor,” said Jong Hyun Kim, Visiting Professor of Nuclear & Quantum Engineering Department of KAIST who will be conducting one of the joint programs with the Electrical Engineering Department of the King Saud University. “Like this joint research, I hope KAIST will, in many different ways, lead the way in cooperating and interacting with higher education institutions of the Middle EAST.” Al-Anquari, Minister of Higher Education of Saudi Arabia, who showed great interest in KAIST’s innovative research and high technology development, expressed his will to put more effort into extending the interchange between universities of Saudi Arabia and of Korea, including KAIST.

Yoon-Gyeong Shim donates two billion won's worth of stocks to KAIST.
“We hope KAIST will succeed my late husband’s will.” A 47-year-old widow donated two billion won’s worth of stock to KAIST in respect to her late husband’s will for the scientific development and training of scientifically talented people of Korea. On the 27 of September, KAIST announced that the late CEO of Seoul Alloy Metal’s widow, Yoon-Gyeong Shim, donated her and her children’s inheritance of two billion won’s worth of stocks to KAIST through an agent. While wondering how to spend their inherited two billion won, the family found certificates and contracts of donation in the late CEO Geyong-Dae Kim’s possession. The late lamented Mr. Kim had been donating a certain amount of money monthly for those in need, including undernourished children. Shim decided to donate to Korea’s IT-leading KAIST to succeed her late husband’s will, the husband who lived a life of sharing and dedicated his whole life in the IT department. Shim’s two children, Hyunjae (19 years old) and Youngjae (17 years old) happily participated in this decision. The company represented by Kim, Seoul Alloy Metals, is a national company that produces basic conjugates used in electric and electronic machinery, with founding technology in the environmental-friendly smokeless lead-free solder division. “I believe my late husband, who passed away before his time, would be glad with our family’s decision,” said Shim. “We may be living in a faraway country called New Zealand but my children and I are proud Koreans and we are very glad to give a small hand to Korea’s proud KAIST. We hope KAIST can succeed my late husband’s passion and will for the development of scientific technology. We wish it can be used not only for the development of KAIST, but for the development of Korea.” “KAIST is grateful of Shim’s decision to donate to KAIST,” said President Suh. “To follow the lofty will of the decedent, KAIST will try our best to train the best scientifically talented people and become the best university in the world.” Since appointment of President Suh at KAIST, KAIST has put an effort to spread a donating culture. As a result, KAIST donators have expanded omnidirectionally, including professors, staff, students, alumni, parents of students, and the general public. The number of donations was 1,004 in 2006, 2,139 in 2007, 3,066 in 2008, and 3,304 in 2009.

The 9th International Conference on Entertainment Computing Held, Sep 8-11, 2010
The cyber world is no longer an unrealistic place for a contemporary man who spends most of his time in front of a computer nowadays. The entertainment contents industry, which materializes the cyber world, leads the new knowledge economy and is emerging as a new growth engine for high value-added industry. Professionals in entertainment computing gathered to discuss how to make the cyber space more elaborate and entertaining. The 9th 2010 International Conference on Entertainment Computing (ICEC) was held from September 8 to September 11 at Seoul COEX by KAIST and International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). This year’s theme is “Creative and Innovative Science, Computing and Design for Digital and Entertainment Contents in 21C”, with fifteen global leaders of industry-university-institute collaboration speakers including George Joblove (Executive VP of Sony Pictures Technologies), Massimiliano Gasparri (VP of Warner Bros. Nature Photonics, a peer-reviewed scientific journal, released a paper written by a KAIST research team on the time-of-flight measurement.
Professor Seung-Woo Kim of the Mechanical Engineering Department, KAIST, and his research team published the result of their study on the measurement of 1 nanometer (nm) precision. “The time-of-flight of light pulses has long been used as a direct measure of distance, but state-of-the-art measurement precision using conventional light pulses or microwaves peaks at only several hundreds of micrometers. Here, we improve the time-of-flight precision to the nanometer regime by timing femtosecond pulses through phase-locking control of the pulse repetition rate using the optical cross-correlation technique,” Professor Kim said. According to the experiment conducted by the research team, “An Allan deviation of 117 nm in measuring a 700m distance in air at a sampling rate of 5 millisecond (ms) once the pulse repetition is phased-locked, which reduces to 7 nm as the averaging time increases to 1 second (s).” When measuring an object located in a far distance, a laser beam is projected to the object, and the reflected light is analyzed; the light is then converted into an electric signal to calculate the distance. In so doing, Professor Kim said, the conventional method of measurement creates at least 1 mm of deviation. He argues, “This enhanced capability is maintained at long range without periodic ambiguity, and is well suited to lidar applications. This method could also be applied to future space missions involving formation-flying satellites for synthetic aperture imaging and remote experiments related to general relativity theory." Nature Photonics published the article online on August 8, 2010.
