KAIST (President Nam Pyo Suh) had the 3rd KAIST Junghoon Cho Academic Award ceremony at the conference room in the main administration building, Friday, May 11, at 2 pm with President Suh and the bereaved family attended.
Sehoon Kim, a doctoral researcher at the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and KAIST graduate, was named as the 3rd recipient of the Junghoon Cho Academic Award in recognition of his achievement that establishes the design method of supersonic vacuum device. The scholarship was granted to Yongdae Kim (doctoral student of Aerospace Engineering, KAIST), Daehyun Kim (master student of Mechanical Engineering, Korea University), and Suncheol Park (senior of the Attached High School to the College of Education at kongju National University). The prize money is 20 million won, and the scholarship amounts to 3 million and 2 million won for university and high school students, respectively.
“Junghoon Cho Academic Award” is a meaningful award established by the donation of compensation money and personal properties, amounting to about 470 billion won, by Donggil Cho, father of the late Ph.D. Junghoon Cho who died at the explosion accident at the Wind Tunnel Laboratory in 2002, ▲ Ph.D. Sehonn Kim

Prof. Bien Named IFSA Fuzzy Fellow
Zeungnam Bien, a professor of Electrical Engineering, has been named a Fuzzy Fellow of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA).
IFSA Fuzzy Fellows are named by the Fuzzy Fellows Committee based on the degree of technical contributions to the fuzzy set and its relevant fields and the degree of contribution for the establishment of fundaments in the field of advanced applied technologies development and fuzzy fields. IFSA has named total 36 fellows since its first one at the world congress in Prague in 1997.
Professor Bien has worked as the chairman of the IFSA and will be officially named a Fuzzy Fellowship at the IFSA World Congress at Cancun, Mexico in June.

KAIST Opens CFTS
- To research the prevention of the illegal production of security technologies
- Total 1.5 billion won of research expenses and 102 researchers to be invested for the next three years- Opening ceremony at the computer science building, KAIST on April 13 at 10 am
KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) will open ‘the Center of Fusion Technology for Security (CFTS)’ under the auspices of the Korea Minting & Security Printing Corporation (KOMSCO, President Hae-Sung Lee) to undertake researches over the prevention of illegal reproduction of security technologies. The opening ceremony was held at the computer science building, KAIST on Friday, April 13.
Total .1.5 billion won of research expenses and 102 researchers will be invested in the center for the next three years.
Main research fields are ▲ advanced IT-based information concealment methods ▲ utilization of energy transfer luminescence in host guest nano-substances ▲ the utilization of quantum-dot, non-crystal carbon and piezoelectric elements ▲ development of radio frequency identification (RFID), optical, biological security element-applied technologies, etc.
“We’ll develop fusion technologies for security that can easily detect forgeries and alterations of security products by introducing advanced IT, optical, chemical engineering, and biological elements. The development of core technologies applied to security products will activate domestic security markets and enable the export of relevant technologies,” said General Research Director Heung-Kyu Lee, a professor of Computer Sciences.

Prototype technologies for world highest efficiency PDP lightening developed by Prof. Choi
- Core technologies that will solve power consumption problems in PDPs- To be unveiled as invited paper at conference by Society for Information Display in May
A domestic research team has developed prototype technologies for high efficiency lightening that can significantly improve the power consumption of Plasma Display Panels (PDP).
A team headed by Kyung Cheol Choi, a professor of Electrical & Computer Science in KAiST (President Nam-Pyo Suh), has developed new cell structures and driving methods of PDP, typical digital television, which can increase the luminous efficacy of PDP four times and are to be unveiled at the conference by the Society for Information Display (SID) as an invited paper. The SID is the world largest information display society and the conference will be held at Long Beach, CA, U.S. on May 21.

Best Academic Award to Prof. Huen Lee
Professor Huen Lee, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, received the Best Prize of KAIST Academic Awards at the 36th anniversary ceremony of KAIST.
Professor Lee has published 43 international papers and 12 domestic papers for the past five years and achieved world’s distinguished academic performances such as the development of hydrogen storage technologies, the discovery of the principle on carbon dioxide-methane hydrate swapping, etc.
Professor Lee published his paper on methane hydrate at Science in 2003, and Nature introduced his paper on hydrate storage technologies as ‘highlight research’ in 2005, commenting his research as a landmark performance to pave ways for the development of future hydrogen energy. His discovery on ‘the principle of carbon dioxide-methane hydrate swapping’, published by PNAS in 2006, also gained huge attraction across the world as one of the promising technologies that can solve energy problem and global warming crisis simultaneously.

KAIST hosts Korea-China High-tech Expo
- Three days from Tuesday, December 12 at Beijing International Convention Center in China
- 30 Korean companies and 40 Chinese companies will participate and exhibit cutting-edge technologies
KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) will host ‘Korea-China High-Tech EXPO 2006’ with Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST) at Beijing International Convention Center in China for three days from Tuesday, December 12.
‘Korea-China High-Tech EXPO’ is an event which has taken place annually since the conclusion of the Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) for the enhancement of international joint researches and mutual exchanges between KAIST and Tsinghua University in the year of 2002 and faces the 4th time this year.
The event began for the activation of technical exchanges between top venture enterprises of the both countries and the enhancement of academic exchanges between top technical universities of the both countries and now has grown into a business stage for the enhancement of competitiveness of venture enterprises and the creation of new markets.
In the event, 30 companies, including Golfzon Co,. Ltd. etc., and 4 institutes, including KAIST Human-Friendly Welfare Robot System Engineering Research Center, etc., from Korea and 40 companies from China will participate and exhibit their cutting-edge technologies. The participants have been selected with the focus on technologies requested by China-side, and each participant will be provided with opportunities of detailed consultation with buyers from ten companies of China. During the event, subsidiary events like excellent technology exhibition, Korea-China technical business forum, special introductions of goods by Mosin Biotech, Inc. and Daeduk Lab Inc., etc. will take place.

Young investigators Forum in CT
The College of Culture Technology invited 13 young investigators acting in the field of Culture Technology around the world and held ‘Young investigators Forum in CT’ at KAIST Creative Learning B/D on October 30 to 31.
Aiming to share research performances in the field of Culture Technology and grope for future research directions, the forum progressed throughout total four sessions. The forum participants with various nationalities made presentations with the topics of ▲ computer music ▲ communication methodology for natives using mobile phones ▲ cultural and social Ecology of classic music ▲ robotic music suing wearable computing and exchanged cultures of each nation.
Ph.D. Bill Buxton, senior researcher of Microsoft and world’s great scholar in the field of Culture Technology, said at his keynote lecture, “The topic we will share today is about researches and a process of asking and answering itself. The reason that we can say ourselves smart is not that we are really smart, but that we can gather smart things.”
The forum provided future visions to students who are interested in cultural industries based on modern digital media as well as persons with Culture Technology degrees.

CJIS donates development fund of two hundreds million won to KAIST
CJ Investment & Securities Co., Ltd. (CJIS/ CEO Hong-Chang Kim) donated a development fund of two hundreds million won to KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) on Monday, August 30 to contribute to the development of KAIST and its fostering of science genius.
At the donation ceremony held at the main conference room in KAIST main administration building, CJIS CEO Hong-Chang Kim said, “I am very pleased to contribute to the development of KAIST, which is developing into a world-class research university.” In response to this, KAIST president Nam-Pyo Suh said, “I am very grateful for CJIS’s support. I will do my best to make KAIST one of the world-class research universities to be the hub of the world as well as Korea in the field of the cutting-edge science and technology.”

KAIST-Tsinghua High-Tech EXPO 2004

KAIST and Tsinghua University are holding KAIST-Tsinghua Korea-China High Tech EXPO 2004 from July 12 to 14, at the Beijing International Convention Center. The Expo seeks to contribute to economic development through promoting exchanges between exceptional Korean and Chinese start-up companies, and to promote cooperation between high-tech industries and academic institutions through academic and technological exchanges between each nation"s best technology institutions.
The Expo is a big international affair held by a university from Korea and one from China. The Expo is also a means to implement the agreement between KAIST and Tsinghua in 2002 to promote exchanges between the two universities and to conduct international co-research. It is sponsored by various technology institutions of both nations.
The Expo is different from other expos in that it is a specialized expo where Tsinghua-related companies, experts, and buyers participate to discuss the transfer of technologies and to deal in trades. Also, to insure that the Expo is beneficial to participating Korean companies, the Expo plans to offer business talks with at least ten Chinese companies per company. From Korea, thirteen companies from enterprise-incubation center and graduate start-ups with high-tech start-ups in areas of IT, BT, NT and mechatronics that are possible in exporting related products or transferring related technologies are participating. From China, Tsinghua-related companies, China Telecom, China Unicom, and other companies under China Telecommunication Association with other famous Chinese companies are expected to participate.
In addition to exhibitions, co-work between KAIST and Tsinghua"s research centers and KAIST"s Technology Transfer & Exchange Center"s explanation on public technology transfer are taking place during the Expo.
And, after three days of the Expo, about ten companies will move to Chungking, a city in western China to hold a product and technology explanation session.

Professor Kim Donates W5 Bil. to KAIST

A professor from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has donated his inherited wealth of 5 billion won to the state-owned institute.
The KAIST announced professor Kim Dong-won contributed 5 billion won in properties and cash, which he inherited from his father, who passed away late last year.
``Professor Kim has asked us to spend the contribution in the development of Korea’s science in accordance with the late Kim’s will,’’ said Park Jae-wook, a KAIST spokesman.
Park added Kim had tried to remain anonymous, but his identity was revealed by some local newspapers. Kim is currently in the United States as he is out of his post on an interim basis and will come back to Korea in August.
Four billion won of the donation will be used to set up scholarships, which will endow 20 million won each to 10 KAIST students every year. The remaining 1 billion won will help invite illustrious scholars to the institute.
Adding to the good news for KAIST, Lee Chong-moon, chairman of the U.S.-based venture company Ambex, has also donated 2 billion won.
The 76-year-old Lee called for the KAIST to inspire a sprit among students by establishing a management center named after him.

[Unknown] Wins Program Competition

The 3rd Korean Collegiate Programming Competition took place on November 7 at Sky-city Convention Center, Seoul. This competition is organized by the Ministry of Telecommunication and is sponsored by KAIST, ACM, and Korean Information Science Institution. This year"s preliminary competition consisted of 112 teams from 50 domestic universities, and 53 teams were selected from the preliminaries. In total, sixty teams, including foreign teams, participated in the main competition that took place at the Sky-city Convention Center.
This year"s competition was won by "Unknown" from KAIST; this team is composed of three students: Min-sang Noh, Gih-moon Song, and Joong-geun Lee. Last year"s competition was also won by a team from KAIST.
In this year"s competition, five teams solved all the problems, but "Unknown" was the best in organizing the programs and in employing various concepts into the program. Another team from KAIST, "KIN~" won 4th Prize.
The winner of this competition automatically becomes an Asian representative at the ACM- International Collegiate Programming Competition (ACM-ICPC) along with the winners of collegiate competitions from Japan, China, India, and Iran. The 28th ACM-ICPC is to be held in March 2004.
