A heated battle of science and sports, who is the winner of this year's KA-PO War?
< Photos from KAIST-POSTECH Science War (photographed by Student Junhyeok Park of KAIST Freshman Course) > The future leaders of science at KAIST and POSTECH (President Seong Keun Kim) held their annual science and sporting event at POSTECH for two days from September 20th to 21st. The 'KAIST-POSTECH Science War (hereafter KA-PO War)' is a festival consisting of science and sports games and various side events to promote exchange and cooperation between the two universities. It is also known by the nickname 'Science War'. KA-PO War consists of △Science Games △e-Sports △Athletics, and the two universities compete in a total of 7 events including hacking competitions, artificial intelligence programming (AI), science quizzes, League of Legends (LOL), baseball, basketball, and soccer. In particular, the 9-hour ‘hacking competition’ and the ‘AI programming’ competition, which pits the AI design strategies of the two universities against each other, are famous for its competitions that are not easily seen at other universities. The future science leaders of KAIST and POSTECH competed with their brains and physical strength even in the rain, and in the competition where the university that wins more than 4 out of 7 events wins, KAIST won with a score of 6 to 1 after fierce matches. In addition, for this KAIST competition, Byeong-cheol Kim, the CEO of POSTECH Holdings and an alumnus of the Department of Industrial Management at POSTECH, donated 10 million won for the preparation of this event. < Photos from KA-PO War site (photographed by Student Junhyeok Park of KAIST Freshman Course) > KA-PO War Director Henry Kwon (KAIST Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) said, “I would like to thank the planning team and supporters who worked hard to make it a successful event. This year’s KA-PO War shined even brighter because of the students from both universities who cheered passionately and played games despite the hot weather and rain. I hope this will be an opportunity to further strengthen the bond and sense of belonging among engineering students.” KA-PO War Preparatory Committee Chairman Sa-joon Hong (POSTECH Department of Physics) said, “As if to manifest this year’s motto, ‘BLAST,’ the intense heat swept through the competition, and regardless of the outcome, the students from both universities took away unforgettable and precious memories.” As a kind of student festival jointly held between the two universities, which have been held annually since 2002, KAIST-POSTECH Science Wars is held under a different name each year depending on the venue. This year, it was held at POSTECH, thus called ‘KA-PO War.’

Postech-KAIST Rivalry Heats Up at the 16th Science War
The 16th Postech-KAIST Science War wrapped up its two-day rivals’ duel at the KAIST campus in Daejeon on September 23. The event was established in 2002 to build a close tie between the two renowned universities for science and technology, and to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their talents and abilities. On September 21, a convoy of red Postech buses carrying more than 650 athletes, students, and supporters arrived at the KAIST campus in Daejeon. The two teams competed in eight events including both online and sports event. The night before the actual games started, cheerleading teams from both Postech Cheero and KAIST ELKA kicked off the event. 1st Day (September 22) The hacking tournament marked the beginning of the Science War. The event started at nine in the morning. Both teams had to solve four problems within 12 hours. While the fierce hacking competition was underway, school music bands, including Twenties Dreams, opened up the event with beautiful voices. The soccer game took place in the university stadium. The KAIST soccer team brought the first win to KAIST, and was their second straight victory in soccer. At the outdoor theatre, the evening games, including Artificial Intelligence and E-sports (League of Legend) began. After the E-sports, both KAIST’s and Postech’s music and dance clubs showed amazing performances adding more excitement to the event. Another fun aspect of the event was the ‘evening street food market’. Food trucks and food booths were lined up to satisfy students’ hunger. Talso here were various game booths such as can bowling, balloon darts, and lamp DIY. 2nd Day (September 23) The baseball team marked the second day of the Science War in the Undergraduate Field. The KAIST team won the game by six runs. Science quizzes sealed the Postech-KAIST Science War. Although the KAIST team led at the beginning, the Postech team overtook them by getting bonus point answers correct. This game decided Postech winning this year’s Science War. As a spin-off, a badminton game was held in the Sports Complex and the KAIST team beat the Postech team with ease. Last but not least, a basketball game was held in the Sports Complex. In the last game of the Science War, the KAIST team wiped away the stain of last year’s defeat. At the closing ceremony, famous rappers and school music clubs celebrated the last moments of the Science War. 10th Annual POSTECH-KAIST Competition: 'Revenge of the Blue Dragon'
KAIST is out for revenge after losing last year in the POSTECH-KAIST Annual Competition, a college rivalry between the two science and technology schools. The competition was held over two days, 23rd and 24th of September and involved 2,000 students from the two universities. The POSTECH-KAIST Competition, also known as ‘Science War,’ is an annual event which started in 2002 to encourage active interaction between the two universities and increase public interest in science and technology education. The 2011 Competition marked the 10th competition as the 2009 competition was cancelled due to “swine influenza.” The Competition is held every mid-September, and the title of the competition depends on the venue; the name of the host university is marked last by convention, hence the 2011 Science War was known as ‘POSTECH-KAIST Competition’ since the competition was held in KAIST. The competition is composed of Hacking Competition, Science Trivia, Artificial Intelligence Programming Contest, StarCraft, Soccer, Baseball, and Basketball. 800 points are up for grabs, and the university with the most points wins. Both universities have won four times and lost four times and therefore promises to be a mouthwatering encounter this year. Apart from the various competitions, interaction between clubs, cheerleading performances, and congratulatory concert (Dynamic Duo) were prepared. In addition, a beer party was hosted from 11pm of the first day of the competition to 2am the following day which brought students from the two universities closer together. President Seo Nam Pyo of KAIST commented, “I am very happy that the two universities at the forefront of Korean Science and Technology can come together to interact and compete wholeheartedly through the 10th POSTECH-KAIST Competition” and that, “I hope that the students can exhibit the skills and ability that they have practiced hard on and uphold the proud history and tradition of KAIST.” All games can be viewed at http://voki.kaist.ac.kr after the end of the Competition.
