President Shin Shares Innovation Strategy at Moscow
President Sung-Chul Shin shared the recipe for success for rapid national development through university education during the Island 10-22 Conference held at the Skolov Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow on July 16. President Shin stressed how urgent it is for higher education to rapidly embrace the new global economic environment brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution in his keynote address entitled ‘Roles and Responsibilities of Universities for Rapid National Development’. The Island 10-22 Conference is a summit co-organized by the National University of Science and Technology MISIS and University of the National Technological Initiative 2035 and supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. More than 30 world-renowned experts, presidents of leading technological universities including President Peretz Lavie from the Israel Institute of Technology Technion, President Scott Pulsipher from Western Governors University and specialists in big data participated in the conference as speakers and discussed a diverse spectrum of ideas for making innovations and digital transformations in universities. More than 1,600 participants joined the conference. During his keynote speech, President Shin explained how Korea has achieved such rapid economic growth over the past half century. He cited the Korean government’s vision and innovation policies as factors leading to Korea’s phenomenal success. KAIST, one of the results of the Korean government’s innovation policy, led the nation to advanced technological breakthroughs in industries such as semiconductors. Such visionary policies and investments in science, technology, and education eventually made the Korea of today possible. President Shin said that KAIST distinguished itself through its new vision of C3 that fosters intellectual creativity, caring for others, and a challenging mind . Under Vision 2031, a blueprint for becoming a leading global university, President Shin said the KAIST continues to strive for innovations in convergent education,research and entreprenurship.

Next-Generation Small Satellite Starts Operations
Korea’s next generation small satellite developed by KAIST started its space observation missions after completing its performance checkup, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced on April 16. The Ministry said that the Next Sat-1, launched on Dec. 4, has successfully deployed its solar panels, adjusted its posture and carried out internal checks to see if all system were functioning normally. The Next Sat-1, expected to be operation for some two years, is the first locally made satellite to have instruments for the Study of Space Storms (ISSS) that can check the impact of solar storms on the magnetic field of the pole areas. It can be further used to detect changes to the Earth's ionosphere in low longitude regions. The ministry said the satellite's near-infrared imaging spectrometer (NISS) camera will be used to peer into space with one of tasks to determine the brightness of the M95 barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Leo. KAIST built the large capacity memory and communication equipment with others, like Asia Pacific Satellite Inc., building star tracking sensors, computers and high speed data processors specifically designed for space. The satellite weighs 100 kg and is in orbit 575 km from the surface of the Earth. “Everything has been checked to be in working order with initial tests utilizing its sensors and camera revealing positive results,” the Ministry said in a statement. President Shin to be Honored from Northwestern University
(KAIST President Sung-Chul Shin) President Sung-Chul Shin has been named the recipient of the Distinguished Career Achievement Award 2019 for Alumni of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. The awards committee announced last month that the committee decided to award President Shin in recognition of his significant contribution toward materials research, particularly in the field of magnetic materials, and also for the leadership he has demonstrated in higher education. The awards ceremony will take place on May 16 at Northwestern University. President Shin earned his PhD in material physics at Northwestern in 1984 after completing his MS in condensed matter physics at KAIST in 1977. He is also a graduate of applied physics from Seoul National University. President Shin, an accomplished scholar in the field of nanoscience and a pioneer of research in nanospinics, has held numerous fellowships including the American Physical Society and received scholarly honor from the Asian Union Magnetics Societies. His research focuses on the artificial synthesis and characterization of nonmagnetic materials, magnetic anisotropy, and magneto-optical phenomena. While studying at Northwestern, he produced novel superlattice multilayer thin film structures with bismuth and lead telluride, noting that they have similar structures. With his expertise, he joined KAIST in 1989 to dedicate himself to academic contributions. During his professorship in the Department of Physics, he produced about 300 journal papers and 37 patents while fostering 80 graduate students. He served as the first president in Daegu-Gyeongbuk Scientific Technology Research Institute (DGIST) for six years from 2011.

President Shin Presents Opportunities & Challenges of the 4IR at the Summer Davos Forum
(President Shin makes a keynote speech at the 2018 Summer Davos Forum in China on Sept.20.) KAIST co-hosted the Asia Session with the World Economic Forum during the 2018 Summer Davos Forum in Tianjin, China from September 18 through 20. The session highlighted regional collaboration in Asia to promote inclusive growth in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. KAIST is working closely with the WEF to take the lead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Last July, KAIST established the Fourth Industrial Revolution Information Center (FIRIC) at the KAIST Institute and signed an MOU with the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) at the WEF in October. The session is a follow-up event KAIST and the C4IR agreed to last year during the Roundtable Session held in Seoul. Many experts in new emerging industries as well as many project directors, including Director Murat Sonmez of the C4IR, attended the session KAIST hosted. Director Chizuru Suga at the C4IR in Japan, Director Danil Kerimi in China, and Director Shailesh Sharda in India also attended the session and discussed ways to expand collaboration and networks among the countries. In his keynote speech at the session on September 20, President Sung-Chul Shin presented how the Korean government is trying to drive the economy by strategically investing in focused industries in the new global industrial environment. President Shin introduced the government’s strategic roadmap to build the competitiveness of emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and precision medicine. He also stressed that the three components of innovation, collaboration, and speed should be prioritized in all sectors for the successful realization of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. For instance, innovation in education, research, and technology commercialization, expansive domestic and international collaboration beyond the private and public sectors, speedy deregulation, and efficient governance will all be critical. He also said that KAIST will launch new pilot collaboration projects along with the WEF soon. “We paved the way for leading the network with major countries including Japan and India for advancing the Fourth Industrial Revolution through this session,” President Shin said.

ICISTS 2018: Presence of the Wall, Constraint or Control
A KAIST undergraduates body, ICISTS (International Conference for Integration of Science, Technology and Society) will host the 2018 international conference from July 30 to August 3 at KAIST. Under the theme of “Presence of the Wall: Constraint or Control,” participants will share their opinions on the limits the global world is facing today and look for answers discussing various social issues and technologies. More than 300 students from 60 universities in 15 countries will attend the conference. Speakers include CEO Sebastien Gendron of TransPod Inc., a Canadian company designing and manufacturing ultra-high-speed transportation technology and vehicles, researcher Sven Kreiss from the Visual Intelligence for Transportation of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Professor Des Freedman from the Department of Media and Communications of Goldsmiths, University of London and political scientist-technologist Wilneida Negrón at the Data & Society Research Institute of Ford Foundation in the US. The conference will hold programs to facilitate the exchange of ideas among speakers and participants. Participants will make small teams for free discussions to share their ideas and thoughts about issues affecting the human race. Participants will be also assigned a team project in which they must come up with creative ideas based on the lectures. Moreover, they can try new gadgets from companies during the Experience Session. ICISTS was established in 2005 by undergraduate students from KAIST. The organization holds an international conference every year to explore ways to create harmonization among society, science, and technology. Eight Professors to Lead Top 100 Future Technologoies
On December 18, the National Academy of Engineering of Korea selected the 100 top future technologies that will be the engine growth for Korea in 2025. It also announced experts that will lead the selected technologies. Out of the 238 experts listed, eight professors are from KAIST. The academy chose technologies based on their potential to be commercialized and contribution to developing related industries in Korea. Giving more weight to young scientists or engineers, it also selected up to three experts who are playing a crucial role in realizing each technology. Out of 238 experts, 78 of them are from universities, 76 from major enterprises, 65 from public institutions and 19 from SMEs. KAIST is the instituttion that produced the second most experts, follwoing Seoul National University.

KAIST's Future Strategy Graduate School Holds Its 100th Public Forum
The Graduate School of Future Strategy at KAIST has hosted regularly a public forum on Fridays at the Korea Telecom building in Seoul, to offer an open platform for policy discussions and exchange ideas since its establishment in 2012. This Friday’s forum on March 17, 2017 will mark the hundredth of its kind. The forum has served as a weekly meeting at which experts and citizens from various professional backgrounds gather together and share their views and insights on strategies and policies to help Korea advance toward a better future. As a result, the forum has implemented its role as a catalyst for “collected intellectualism.” To date, over 200 participants have engaged in discussions and put forward suggestions on such issues as future strategies, a smart defense system, mid- and long-term national development, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things, augmented reality, robotics, and future automotive technology. The forum has also taken the lead in identifying issues that will become important to national progress in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Among the notable topics discussed so far, the aftermath of the Al-embedded video game of Go, AlphpaGo’s match against a human player, which took place in March last year in Korea, attracted a great deal of attention from the public. The Friday’s forum will discuss ways to unify the divisive public views over the recent political issue of the presidential impeachment and explore strategies to promote mutual growth and solidity. The event will be conducted in Korean only, and also be aired live via the Africa Web Television and Facebook for online participation. Ideas proposed and suggested during discussions are compiled and published annually as a book entitled “The National Future Strategy for the Republic of Korea.” Professor Kwang Hyung Lee of the Future Strategy Graduate School said, “When we first envisioned this setting for these discussions, no one at our school really thought that we would host the forum 100 times. It has lasted much longer than we could have imagined, and we hope that this will continue to remain relevant to society as a meaningful public venue to think about our nation’s future.”

KAIST Ranked the World's Sixth Most Innovative University
KAIST took sixth place in the list of “The World’s Top 100 Most Innovative Universities.” Thomson Reuters released the list on September 28, 2016, which was based on the data compiled by its division of Intellectual Property & Science such as patent filings, number of research papers and their citations, and industry collaboration. American universities took ranks from first to fifth; KAIST was the only non-American university that ranked highest in the list. ICISTS Hosts the International Interdisciplinary Conference
A KAIST student organization, The International Conference for the Integration of Science, Technology and Society (ICISTS), will host ICISTS 2016 at the Hotel ICC in Daejeon from 3 to 7 August with the participation of around 300 Korean and international students. ICISTS was first established in 2005 to provide an annual platform for delegates and speakers to discuss the integration and the convergence of science, technology, and society regardless of their academic backgrounds. This year’s conference, with the theme of “Beyond the Center,” emphasizes the ways in which technological advancements can change central organizations in areas such as financial technology, healthcare, and global governance. The keynote speakers include Dennis Hong, a developer of the first automobile for the blind and a professor of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at UCLA, Dor Konforty, a founder and a CEO of SNS platform Synereo, and Marzena Rostek, a professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Other notable speakers include: Gi-Jung Jung, Head of the National Fusion Research Institute; Janos Barberis, Founder of FinTech HK; Tae-Hoon Kim, CEO and Founder of Rainist; Gulrez Shah Azhar, Assistant Policy Analyst at RAND Corporation; Thomas Concannon, Senior Policy Researcher at RAND Corporation; Leah Vriesman, Professor at the School of Public Health, UCLA; and Bjorn Cumps, Professor of Management Practice at Vlerick Business School in Belgium. The conference consists of keynote speeches, panel discussions, open talks, experience sessions, team project presentations, a culture night, and a beer party, at which all participants will be encouraged to interact with speakers and delegates and to discuss the topics of their interest. KAIST Makes a List of Top Ten Most Innovative Universities around the World
Reuters News released a list of the World’s Top 100 Most Innovative Universities on September 15, 2015. Nine of the top ten universities on the list were American institutions. KAIST took tenth place, the only non-American and Asian university to do so. Stanford University ranked first, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second, and Harvard University in third. The inaugural Reuters Top 100 survey based its rankings on ten criteria: patent volume, patent successes, global patents, patent citations, patent citation impact, percent of patents cited, patent to article citation impact, industry article citation impact, percent of industry collaborative articles, and the total number of science papers. Japan had nine universities in the survey, more than all countries except for the United States. South Korea has a total of eight universities on the list including Pohang University of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Hanyang University. KAIST Participates in the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2015 in China
KAIST’s president and its professors actively engage in discussions of major issues on higher education, technology innovation, and industry-university collaboration with global leaders from across all sectors. President Steve Kang of KAIST participated in the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2015 (a.k.a., Summer Davos Forum) hosted by the World Economic Forum (WEF). With the theme of “Charting a New Course for Growth,” the Summer Davos Forum took place on September 9-11, 2015 in, Dalian, China. Currently, KAIST is a member of the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF) of WEF, a gathering of the presidents of the top 25 universities in the world, including Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Tokyo, University of Oxford, Peking University, and National University of Singapore. GULF allows university leaders an opportunity to have high-level dialogues on higher education and research and explore prospects for cooperative ventures. President Kang led the discussion of the GULF session at the Summer Davos Forum, which was held on September 10, 2015, with 25 university leaders as well as two business leaders from Chinese companies: Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., and Sanofi China. The participants shared candid perspectives on industry-university collaboration, particularly the need for such partnerships in Asia. In addition, KAIST hosted the fourth IdeasLab session, entitled “Bio versus Nano Materials, on September 9, 2015. At the session, four KAIST professors held an in-depth debate and discussion with the audience on whether the next industrial revolution would be driven by advances in biomaterials or nanomaterials. The topics under discussion were: - New materials that mimic biology by Professor Hea Shin Lee - Bio-based materials that replace petroleum-based materials by Professor Sang Yup Lee - New materials designed at sub-nano scale by Professor Hee Tae Jung - A hydrogen economy with nanomaterials by Professor Eun Ae Cho Since its establishment in 2007, the Summer Davos Forum has become the biggest business and political gathering in Asia, held annually either in Dalian or Tianjin, China. The Forum has attracted more than 1,500 participants primarily from emerging nations such as China, India, Russia, Mexico, and Brazil, and has offered an open platform to address issues important to the region and the global community.
