Max Planck만의 차별화된 연구환경을 소개하고 뛰어난 연구인력을 양성할 수 있었던 배경과 전략에 대해 강연합니다.

- Abstract -

 The Max Planck Society (MPG) is one of the world’s leading research organisations and achieved this status soon after its foundation. The MPG has hosted many outstanding scientists and has been the incubator of many scientific breakthroughs. This talk will introduce the Max Planck Society, concentrating on how it differs from most universities and other research organisations (in particular in Germany) and what steps it takes in order to produce, attract and keep leading researchers. The general philosophy of the Harnack principle, the guiding principle of the Max Planck Society and the funding of departments and institutes will be introduced. In addition, instruments such as the International Max Planck Research Schools, Max Planck Research Groups, and the Minerva Program will be given a mention.

- Sami K. Solanki -

Sami K. Solanki is Director at the Max-Planck-Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Germany and head of the Solar and Heliospheric Department. He did his PhD at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland, to which he returned after a post doc period at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. After a professorship at the University of Oulu, Finland, he joined the Max Planck Society in 1999. He has been endowed with Honorary Professorships by the ETH and the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. Since 2009 he is a Distinguished Professor at Kyung Hee University in Korea.

His scientific interests are focussed on the physics of the Sun, including the Sun’s influence on the Earth’s climate. He has published over 360 refereed scientific papers and is Editor-in-Chief of the refereed electronic review journal “Living Reviews in Solar Physics” (Impact factor of 12.5). He also founded the International Max Planck Research School on Physical Processes in the Solar System and Beyond. He is leading the SUNRISE Mission of the German Space Agency, DLR, NASA and the Spanish Space Agency, is the Principal Investigator of the SO/PHI instrument on the European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter mission and is a Co-I of a number of further instruments on ESA and NASA space missions.
